Thus, most of the uses of air conditioning before the 1930s concentrated on applications that had a viable financial payback. More than half of the reported tests were carried out in laboratory air without facilities for controlling humidity (Table 17.19). In order to be certain of the results of a particular experiment, and to ensure reproducibility, it is important that the appropriate precautions are taken, and that proper preparations are made. Many common organic reactions involve the use of air sensitive reagents, which requires the reaction to be carried out under inert, anhydrous conditions. These conditions are also used for reactions which are sensitive to the presence of water. Other important lithium compounds include lithium chloride, which has significant water-absorbing power. This allows for the use of lithium chloride in the manufacture of air conditioning units. Another compound, lithium stearate, is the product of a reaction between stearic acid and lithium hydroxide. This compound is useful as a type of grease able to withstand extremely low temperatures. [Pg.63]

The areas which can be successfully cleaned inside boiler plant include superheaters, reheaters, economisers, furnace nose, fiimace walls and furnace hopper. It is possible to begin the cleaning process while the structure is still hot (i.e. as opposed to cool conditions required for the entry of cleaning personnel for manual cleaning or for the use of air or water jets. [Pg.395]
