The Round-up

Because of the different electronegativities of the various halogens, we can also predict that fluorine will have a greater effect than chlorine, which in turn will increase acidity more than bromine or iodine. This is reflected in the observed acidities of monohalogenated acetic acids, though the increased acidity of chloroacetic acid (pATa 2.87) over bromoacetic acid (pATa 2.90) is not apparent because of the rounding-up process. [Pg.126]

Mitosis is heralded by the rounding up of the cell, and the first visible indication that it is about to divide is a change in appearance... [Pg.188]

Fractional equilibrium stages have meaning. The 11.4 will be divided by a tray efficiency, and the rounding up to an integral number of actual trays should be done after that division. For example, if the average tray efficiency for the process modeled in Fig. 13-27 is 80 percent, men the number of actual trays required is 11.4/0.8= 14.3, which is rounded up to 15. [Pg.22]

The discriminating interventions that a legible society makes possible can, of course, be deadly as well. A sobering instance is wordlessly recalled by a map produced by the City Office of Statistics of Amsterdam, then under Nazi occupation, in May 1941 (figure 13). Along with lists of residents, the map was the synoptic representation that guided the rounding up of the city s Jewish population, sixty-five thousand of whom were eventually deported. [Pg.78]

The round-up lathe. There are advantages in partially rounding up the log prior to passing it to the main lathe. In the round-up lathe the eccentricity, sweep and taper of the log are largely removed until recovery of short lengths or widths of veneer appears viable, at whieh point the bolt is prepared and ready for the main lathe. The round-up lathe reduees significantly the amount of unproductive time at the main lathe. Furthermore, any dirt or stones clinging to the log mark the round-up knife rather than the main veneer knife which must be kept in perfect condition if it is to cut quality veneer. [Pg.408]

In considering the rounding up of the rrth significant figure, we consider the next (i.e. the n + l)th) significant figure only. [Pg.12]

Xp is chosen to satisfy the minimum allowable Ft (e.g., for Ft > 0.75, Xp = 0.9 is used). Once the real (noninteger) number of shells is calculated from Eq. (7.14), this is rounded up to the next largest number to obtain the number of shells. [Pg.226]

Now roll up the Carius tube (while still in a vertical position) in a strip of ordinary thick drying paper, and then place it in the heavy iron protector tube if the Carius tube is too short and tends to disappear within the iron tube, a short section of old glass tubing should first be placed in the iron tube so that the capillary of the Carius tube just projects. The function of the paper is to protect the Carius tubing from being scratched, and also (more important) to prevent the local overheating which would otherwise occur at places where the Carius tube is in direct contact with the iron tube. The sealed tube, throughout its manipulation, should be left as nearly vertical as possible, so that the contents do not leave the rounded end. [Pg.420]

In a 2-1. round-bottomed flask are placed 120 g. (1.83 moles) of 92% ethylenediamine (Note 1), 300 ml. of 95% ethanol, and 300 ml. of water. The flask is attached to an efficient reflux condenser, and 121 ml. of carbon disulfide is placed in a separatory funnel attached to the top of the condenser by means of a notched cork. About 15 to 20 ml. of the carbon disulfide is added, and the flask is shaken to mix the contents. A vigorous reaction takes place (Note 2), and it may be necessary to cool the flask. After the reaction has started, a water bath at 60° is placed under the flask and the balance of the carbon disulfide is added at such a rate that the vapors reflux about one-third the way up the condenser. About 2 hours are required for the addition of the carbon disulfide. At this time the bath temperature is raised to about 100°, and the mixture is allowed to reflux for 1 hour. Then 15 ml. of concentrated hydrochloric acid is added, and the mixture is refluxed under a good hood (bath at 100°) for 9 to 10 hours. The mixture is cooled in an ice bath, and the product is filtered by suction on a Buchner funnel and washed with 200-300 ml. of cold acetone (Note 3). A yield of 156-167 g. (83-89%) of white crystals is obtained melting at 197-198° (Note 4). [Pg.34]

Cyclopropyltriphenylphosphonium Bromide (5). The lactone salt is pyrolyzed by placing it in a round-bottom flask fitted with an adaptor attached to a vacuum source (aspirator is sufficient). The flask is heated (oil bath) to 180-190° for 48 hours. The residue is a virtual quantitative yield of the tan product, which may be crystallized from ethyl acetate giving cream crystals, mp 189-190°. An alternate setup is convenient if a drying pistol (Abderhalden) is available. The compound is placed in the pistol, which is then evacuated. Decalin (bp approx. 187°) is refluxed over the pistol to provide the heating source. The work-up is the same. [Pg.109]

Pipe diameters are rounded up to the next standard size, and proper wall thickness (schedule) is determined consistent with the operating pressure of that portion of the system. For the rate factor, see Figure 13-15. [Pg.592]

Rounding off In calculations, round up if the last digit is above 5 and round down if it is below 5. [Pg.911]

If the rounding procedures used for the display did not mask the effect, the math packs that are in use would come up with seemingly nonsensical results now and then, e.g., instead of a straight 6 one might obtain 5.9999999999999 or 6.0000000000001 those who do their own programming in BASIC, for example, are aware of this. [Pg.170]

Note that a number of complicating factors have been left out for clarity For instance, in the EMF equation, activities instead of concentrations should be used. Activities are related to concentrations by a multiplicative activity coefficient that itself is sensitive to the concentrations of all ions in the solution. The reference electrode necessary to close the circuit also generates a (diffusion) potential that is a complex function of activities and ion mobilities. Furthermore, the slope S of the electrode function is an experimentally determined parameter subject to error. The essential point, though, is that the DVM-clipped voltages appear in the exponent and that cheap equipment extracts a heavy price in terms of accuracy and precision (viz. quantization noise such an instrument typically displays the result in a 1 mV, 0.1 mV, 0.01 mV, or 0.001 mV format a two-decimal instrument clips a 345.678. .. mV result to 345.67 mV, that is it does not round up ... 78 to ... 8 ). [Pg.231]

Comment The sequence of digits in each coefficient depends on the precision (e.g., three decimal places) and number of tabulated values (34, 50, or 64), the form of the optimization software used (Hewlett Packard HP71B Curve Fit Module), and the number of coefficients chosen (3. .. 8). Discrepancies between the approximated and the real table entries of up to j-LSD could be due either to insufficiencies of the algorithm or the rounding of table entries. The few LRR that are above 1% do not pose a risk for practical applications. [Pg.330]

Tissue Culture Assay. Kogure et al. (48) report a novel tissue culture assay for detecting several types of sodium channel blockers. The mouse neuroblastoma cell line ATCC CCL 131 is grown in RPMI 1640 supplemented with 13.5% fetal bovine serum and 100 pg/ml gentamycin, in an atmosphere of 5% C0 95% air at 37 C. Ninety-six well plates are seeded with 1 x 10 cells in 200 pi of medium containing 1 mM ouabain and 0.075 mM veratridine. Veratridine and ouabain cause neuroblastoma cells to round-up and die. In the presence of sodium channel blockers (e.g., TTXs or STXs), the lethal action of veratridine is obviated and cells retain normal morphology and viability. An important feature of this assay is that a positive test for sodium channel blockers results in normal cell viability. Since bacterial extracts can contain cytotoxic components, this assay offers an advantage over tests that use cell death as an endpoint. The minimum detectable level of TTX is approximately 3 nM, or approximately 1/1000 mouse unit. [Pg.81]
