The present book describes all the significant studies and findings on the chemistry of the more than 30 different bioluminescent systems presently known, accompanied by over 1000 selected references. It includes descriptions of the purification and properties of bioluminescent compounds, such as luciferins, luciferases and photoproteins, and the mechanisms of luminescence reactions. To make the book more useful than a mere review volume and to save researchers time in looking into original references, I have included a considerable amount of original experimental methods, data and graphs. In addition, I have included some new data and experimental methods unavailable elsewhere. I hope this volume will be useful to researchers and students, and it will be my greatest pleasure if this book contributes...

His first work in the Laboratory of Biological Chemistry was on the purification and properties of potato phosphorylase, but he soon changed his subject to the study of amino-containing sugars. It was not well understood at that time whether there were impurities in the products of separation and purification of proteins. Consequently, Onodera made up his mind to devote his whole life to identifying the chemical nature of amino-containing sugars.

Cheeseman et al. reported in 1972 the purification and properties of a fluorescent compound from Methanobacterium. Owing to the first visible absorption at 420 nm the unknown compound was called Factor-420. It was not until 1978 till it became clear that the compound is a flavin-like molecule By different physical techniques it could be shown that the molecule is a 5-deaza-FMN derivative (Scheme 2, (70)) where at position 8 the methyl group is replaced by a hydroxy group. In addition, the side chain phosphate group is esterified by a lactyl group which, in turn, is linked to a diglutamyl moiety via a peptide bond. Factor-420 functions as...

The contributors of this volume in the New Comprehensive Biochemistry series cover the biosynthesis and metabolism of the prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes the analytical methods currently in use the purification and properties of several enzymes involved in the formation and catabolism of these substances activators and inhibitors of these enzymes as well as the involvement of the members of the prostaglandin family in numerous physiological and pathological processes. 

The purification and properties of LCAT, together with a discussion of its mechanism of reaction are given by Marcel (1982). A number of disease states involve LCAT activity. Familial LCAT deficiency has been described (Glomset and Norum, 1973) and patients with this rare complaint have been thoroughly investigated. Many of the abnormalities seem in such patients have been found in those with cholestasis also. A discussion of cholesterol ester metabolism in relation to other liver diseases and dyslipoproteinaemia has been reported (Marcel, 1982). Similarly, the metabolism of cholesterol esters in relation to arteries and arterial disease has been fully discussed (Kritchevsky and Kothari, 1978). Mammalian steroid sulphates have been reviewed by Farooqui (1981). 

In the present study, we have succeeded in extracting the Dl-specific processing enzyme from spinach thylakoids by Triton X-100 treatment. The purification and properties of this enzyme will be presented in this paper.
