The particles in solids, liquids and gases

You saw on page 9 that a substance can change from solid to liquid to gas. The individual particles of the substance are the same in each state. It is their arrangement that is different  [Pg.10]

The particles in a solid are packed tightly in a fbced pattern. There are strong forces holding them together, so they cannot leave their positions. [Pg.10]

The only movements they make are tiny vibrations to and fro. [Pg.10]

The particles in a liquid can move about and slide past each other. They are still close together but are not in a fixed pattern. The forces that hold them together are weaker than in a solid. [Pg.10]

The particles in a gas are far apart, and they move about very quickly, lliere are almost no forces holding them together. They collide with each other and bounce off in all directions. [Pg.10]
