The Hot Zone

The pusher-type furnace is relatively free from mechanical problems because all mechanical parts are located outside the hot zone. It employs a roller-conveyor usually and will handle charges weighing considerably more per square meter than a belt-conveyor furnace. Pushers are driven by electric motors, compressed air, or hydraulic systems and can be automatically timed and synchronized with door-... [Pg.1197]

Scoop systems are provided for introducing collected dust or, in some cases, a feed component through the shell at some intermediate point or points. Ports are installed in the shell for admitting combustion air at points beyond the hot zone these are used in reducing kilns for burning carbon monoxide and volatiles from materials oeing processed. [Pg.1205]

After the 20K step increase in feed temperature, not much change could be observed for two minutes. Then the last thermocouple started to increase from 560 to 1200 K level, and the hot zone widened. The forward migration rate of the hot zone was about 5 cm/min. After about six minutes, the oxygen content of the cycle gas became very low and temperature slowly started to decline. With this the experiment terminated. [Pg.159]

Aeeess eontrol points are established at the hot zone to regulate the flow of personnel and equipment into and out of the zone. Separate entranees and exits are provided for personnel and heavy equipment. [Pg.63]

The continuous sintering is mainly a zone sintering process in which the electrolyte tube is passed rapidly through the hot zone at about 1700 °C. This hot zone is small (about 60 mm) in zone sintering, no encapsulation devices are employed. The sodium oxide vapor pressure in the furnace is apparently controlled by the tubes themselves. Due to the short residence time in the hot zone, the problem of soda loss on evaporation can be circumvented. A detailed description of / "-alumina sintering is given by Duncan et al. [22]. [Pg.580]

Thermal-Gradient Infiltration. The principle of thermal-gradient infiltration is illustrated in Fig. 5.15b. The porous structure is heated on one side only. The gaseous reactants diffuse from the cold side and deposition occurs only in the hot zone. Infiltration then proceeds from the hot surface toward the cold surface. There is no need to machine any skin and densification can be almost complete. Although the process is slow since diffusion is the controlling factor, it has been used extensively for the fabrication of carbon-carbon composites, including large reentry nose cones. [Pg.131]

Trinuclear carbonyls have been studied with the anticipation that the retention would prove to be in some way inversely related to the molecular complexity. The values obtained were surprisingly high, despite careful chemical purification, as is shown in Table 10. It was suggested that the reformation mechanism must involve exchange reactions during and after the hot zone, starting with M(CO)4, as building blocks . [Pg.80]

An analytical sample exploded in the hot zone of the combustion apparatus. [Pg.306]

Even though carbamate nerve agents are rapidly detoxified or eliminated from the body, exposures may have a cumulative effect in the short-term, placing all responders who entered the hot zone without appropriate chemical protective clothing at increased risk during the remainder of the emergency. [Pg.108]

Some system designs have a double port feeding mechanism that is charged with inert gas to prevent air venting into the hot zone. [Pg.162]

The plasma torch is usually mounted on a circular end wall. The torch is aligned in such a way that waste material falls into the hot zone of the plasma arc. The torch cathode and anode are cooled by forced water flow. In addition, auxiliary cooling of the anode with air can be incorporated in the plasma torch. [Pg.163]

Strength Responders were thoroughly debriefed when they returned to the CP from operations in the hot zone. Logistical support was timely in processing requests once they were established. Additional maps were available at the CP within the first hour. Railroad consists received at the CP within the first hour. Written preplans were used for searches of mill facilities GVW Fire Department walks down all Avondale facilities annually. [Pg.8]

Improvement Item EMS entry into the hot zone was coordinated through ACSO (Aiken County Sheriff Office) Dispatch who contacted the EMS supervisor at USCA (University of South Carolina at Aiken). There was no coordination with the GVW Fire Department. [Pg.17]

Employees in the difference plants were initially able to call supervisors and report what was going on, and then call 911 for an emergency in progress. However, if you wanted to escape from the cloud of chlorine gas, you were pretty on your own. No significant rescue efforts were attempted in the hot zone for hours since law enforcement officers set... [Pg.36]

Tony L. Deloach, age fifty-six, was an invalid who lived in a house on Main Street in Graniteville, He was an Ex-Marine who spent time in Vietnam where he lost much of his vision. He also had emphysema and pain in his knees. His home was near, or in the hot zone, and he died from inhaling chlorine gas. His body was buried in the Graniteville Cemetery with full military honors. [Pg.39]
