The Great Depression

The chemurgy movement grew rapidly during the time of the Great Depression, and the advent of the Second World War resulted in a huge amount of activity to derive as many products as possible from domestic sources, for strategic reasons. However, with the end of the war, the development of many new cheap products by the petrochemicals industry led to the rapid demise of the chemurgy movement. 

Thesis statement The Great Depression was caused neither by the stock market crash of 1929 nor the Smoot Hawley Tariff Act. 

In this essay, I would like to consider why the Great Depression occurred. Some people contend that it was caused by the stock market crash of 1929. Many economists point to the Smoot Hawley Tariff Act as the real reason. However, there is strong evidence to suggest that neither of these factors caused the Great Depression.

John Charles Polanyi was born in Berlin, Germany, into a family of Hungarian origin. Polanyi was born on the eve of the Great Depression, shortly before the Nazi takeover. His father moved to England to become a chemistry professor at Manchester University. Polanyi was sent to Canada for safety during the darkest years of World Warll. 

The most important piece of federal legislation affecting compensation is the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which was adopted in 1938 as a means of economic recovery from the Great Depression. The purposes of the FLSA were to create minimum wage standards, promote fair competition in interstate commerce, generate job growth and reduce unemployment, and curtail child labor. 

There were special circumstances that made this possible. Rollins College in Florida generously gave me a four-year full scholarship in 1937, in the midst of the Great Depression. My most important professor there, Guy Waddington, after my first chemistry course with him, told me I might make a good chemist for industry, but he doubted I could become a research... 

In Detroit, economic turbulence is as natural a disaster as earthquakes are in California. No other city has gone through as many ups and downs as Detroit. The boom cycle started with the birth of the automobile, and between 1905 and 1924 well-paid immigrants filled the assembly lines for Henry Ford s auto factories. The Great Depression in 1929 crippled the industry, sending its workers into poverty. The plants came back online during World War II when the city became a major supplier of military equipment, and the city s outlook was rosy once again. 

Nevertheless, the major restructuring of the chemical industry developed only after the crisis precipitated by a second oil shock following the revolution in Iran in 1979, and extended through 1982 by a double-dip recession that created the worst economic times between the Great Depression and the end of the century.
