Michael Polanyi, 1891-1976. Hungarian physicist who worked in Berlin and Manchester. His son, John Charles Polanyi, received the Noble Price in chemistry in 1986. 

John Charles Polanyi was born in Berlin, Germany, into a family of Hungarian origin. Polanyi was born on the eve of the Great Depression, shortly before the Nazi takeover. His father moved to England to become a chemistry professor at Manchester University. Polanyi was sent to Canada for safety during the darkest years of World Warll. 

John Charles Polanyi (b. 1929), Canadian chemist of Hungarian origin, son of Michael Polanyi (one of the pioneers in the field of chemical reaction dynamics), and professor at the University of Toronto. John was attracted to chemistry by Meredith G. Evans, who was a student of his father. Three scholars, John Polanyi, Yuan Lee, and Dudley Herschbach shared the 1986 Nobel Prize for their contributions... 

To date there are three scholariy societies dedicated to studying the iife and work of Michaei Poianyi the Michael Polanyi Liberal Philosophical Association in Budapest, which pubiishes the journal Polanyiana-, the Polanyi Society in the United States, which pubiishes Tradition and Discovery and the Society for Post-Critical and Per-sonalist Studies in Britain, which publishes Appraisal. He and his wife Magda had two sons. The elder, George Polanyi, became a successful economist. The younger, John Charles Polanyi, shared the 1986 Nobel Prize In Chemistry for his contributions concerning the dynamics of chemical elementary processes. ...
