EPA is also charged with regulating the release into the environment of the chemical byproducts of industrial processes, for example, diesel exhaust and mercury. 

A nnmber of federal laws protect the environment as well as human health. The discipline of ecotoxicology encompasses toxicity testing in hundreds of nonmammalian species that are evolntionarily distant from our own, for example, fish, algae, zooplankton, higher plants, and birds (Table 5.1). Data obtained in ecotoxicological studies support ecological risk assessments (Chapter 9).
