Much of the discussion at the ANS-NCG meetings was concerned with the appropriate professional society affiliation for the group s activities. Program developers tended to lean toward the ACM however, they realized that the majority of the program users were active ANS members. A letter was sent to the editor of the Communications of the Association for Computing Machinery recommending that computer manufacturers be influenced to (1) implement the standard FORTRAN, and (2) where deviations from the standard exist, flag non-standard statements which are accepted, as well as standard statements which have been implemented in their compiler in a non standard fashion, and describe these variations in their compiler documentation (I5I).

Computer science is the study of all aspects of computers, applied and theoretical. However, considerable disagreement exists over the definition of such basic terms as computer science, computer, hardware, and softvrare. This disagreement can be seen as a testament to the vitality and relative youth of this field. The Association for Computing Machinery s computing classification system, developed in 1998, is an attempt to define computer science. 

Current research on data compression can be found in the related journals and conferences of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) in particular, see the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory and the Journal of the ACM. 

Other society proceedings that may be of interest to electrical engineers are those sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery, (ACM), www.acm.org, and the Society for Industrial... 

When researching engineering education, one should go beyond the general science and education indexes given above. Specific disciplines are best covered by their own databases. Society publications are also indexed in these sources. For example, engineering education for computer science would be well covered by Inspec, IEEE Xplore, and ACM Portal, which indexes publications by the Association for Computing Machinery. 

Engineers and other technical professionals are likely to interact with members of other professions who, in turn, belong to professional societies such as the American Bar Association (ABA), the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) of the American Planning Association (APA), the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG), and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). These groups have codes of ethics tailored to their functions and responsibilities.
