Text tables

Patent databases are therefore integrated databases because facts, text, tables, graphics, and structures are combined. In patents that include chemical aspects (mostly synthesis or processing), the chemical compounds are often represented by Markush structures (see Chapter 2, Section 2.7.1). These generic structures cover many compound families in a very compact maimer. A Markush structure has a core structure diagram with specific atoms and with variable parts (R-groups), which are defined in a text caption. The retrieval of chemical compounds from Markush structures is a complicated task that is not yet solved completely satisfactorily. 

After the preceding considerations have been taken into account, a test plan is developed to best meet the goals of the program. This might involve one of the standard plans developed by statisticians. Such plans are described in various texts (Table 1) and are considered only briefly here. Sometimes, combinations of plans are encountered, such as a factorial experiment conducted in blocks or a central composite design using a fractional factorial base. 

The physical data index summarizes the quantitative data given for specific compounds in the text, tables and figures in Volumes 1-7. It does not give any actual data but includes references both to the appropriate text page and to the original literature. The structural and spectroscopic methods covered include UV, IR, Raman, microwave, MS, PES, NMR, ORD, CD, X-ray, neutron and electron diffraction, together with such quantities as dipole moment, pX a, rate constant and activation energy, and equilibrium constant.

This index lists the heterocyclic parent ring systems and has been compiled from the occurrences of those systems and their derivatives in Volumes 1-15 in the text, tables, equations, and schemes. Table 1 shows an example of markup, generated using the OSCAR 3 system. The abstract of a polymer research paper has been parsed by OSCAR and the resulting markup for the first sentence of the abstract is shown in-line with the text (Table IB). The first chemical entity encountered in the sentence is oleic acid , which has been marked up as type = CM (Chemical Moiety) and a number of other annotations, such as in-line representations of chemical structure (InChl, SMILES) have been attached.

Text tables are used to group together data from the various summary or individual data tables in a convenient location for the reader, to avoid having to leave the text and turn pages to find the values of interest. Text tables should be used sparingly they must have a very simple layout and must only contain the most pertinent data. They should not be overloaded with superfluous information. Footnotes to text tables should be reduced to a minimum and can usually be replaced entirely by better table design (see Tables 3 and 4).
