Tert-amyl bromide

Elimination from tert.-Butyl and tert.-Amyl Bromides in Acidic and Alkaline Alcoholic Media. J. chem. Soc. (London) 1948, 2058. [Pg.63]

Figure 4.21 shows how the bulkiness of the base influences the regioselectivity of the elimination of HBr from tert-amyl bromide. The stericahy undemanding base EtO can react with the H atoms in all -positions to the leaving group, irrespective of whether the H atom is bound to a primary or a secondary C atom. Thus, regioselectivity derives from product development control alone the thermodynamically more stable Saytzeff product is formed preferentially, though not exclusively. [Pg.173]

The sterically hindered base ferf-BuO reacts with tert-amyl bromide in a different manner than EtO and in such a way that steric interactions are minimized (Figure 4.21). This makes the substructure C. —H a more suitable point of reaction than the substructure C —... [Pg.173]

Mercury di-tert-amyl.—To the solution from 12 grams of magnesium and SO grams of tert-amyl bromide in 500 c.c. of ether, 40 grams of mercuric bromide are added and the product worked up in the usual way. Yield 9 grams (21 per cent.). The liquid boils at 80°... [Pg.38]

Reactions 3b and 3c illustrate principles of carbonium ion theory (Chapter 3). Reaction 3a has been beautifully demonstrated by Bartlett and his coworkers.16a When, for example, aluminum bromide in isopentane is treated with /erJ-butyl chloride at room temperature, after about 0.001 second the principal product is tert-amyl bromide ... [Pg.146]

Isoamyl bromide, b.p. 120-120.5°, was prepared as previously described.4 The product was fractionated through a packed column, such as that referred to in Note 9 below, to remove small quantities of tert-amyl bromide arising from sec-butyl carbinol present in the isoamyl alcohol. [Pg.40]
