For over a century this definition sufficed. It was, nevertheless, unsatisfactory, being neither more nor less than a confession of ignorance and impotence. Thus it demanded that caustic potash should be regarded as an element until Davy succeeded in decomposing it by electrolysis in 1807. Similarly lime was regarded as an element and when Charles Tennant chlorinated slaked lime in 1799, the product was perforce called chloride of lime, a name that clings to it even to-day. [Pg.2]

Then, too, the English chemist Smithson Tennant (1761-1815), for whom Wollaston had worked as an assistant, discovered osmium and iridium. Another English chemist, Charles Hatchett (c. 1765-1847), isolated columbium (now olEcially called niobium), while a Swedish chemist, Anders Gustaf Ekeberg (1767-1813), discovered tantalum. [Pg.125]

The expansion of the textile industry also meant that there was much more cloth which needed to be bleached. Traditionally, cloth was bleached by exposure to the sun in bleaching fields this was a very time-consuming process, especially in northern latitudes. In 1785 Berthollet recommended the use of chlorine in the bleaching of textiles, and chemical bleaching soon displaced the traditional technique. Berthollet dissolved the chlorine in caustic potash solution, but an important improvement was made in 1799 by Charles Tennant (1768-1838) in Glasgow. He absorbed chlorine in lime, thereby making the solid product known as bleaching powder. This became another important product of the chemical industry. [Pg.249]

Spanish pyrites were first imported into Britain from the Tharsis region of Spain by the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Company (TSCC) founded in 1867 by the Scottish industrialist John Tennant and his son Charles. Charles was chairman of Tharsis from 1867 to 1906. [Pg.22]

The company s first president was Charles Tennant, who had been running the legendary company Charles Tennant Company, founded by his grandfather. This same yoimger Tennant was no entrepreneurial slouch. For example, he had invested in the risky first major pyrites mines in Spain, albeit two decades earlier. While the Spanish opportunity needed an entrepreneur, the Leblanc industry needed a hard-nosed business leader to protect their investments. Tennant adjusted to the circumstances. [Pg.198]
