Complete cross comparison between the sites is not feasible because the Hajji Firuz phase (ca. 5500 to 4750 B.C.), the Dalma phase (ca. 4750 to 4350 B.C.), and the Pisdeli phase (ca. 4350 to 3550 B.C.) (6) are not represented at every site. All three phases occur at Hajji Firuz, though material from the Pisdeli phase is quite limited. The Dalma phase occurs at Dalma Tepe, with a very limited amount of material attributed to the Hajji Firuz/ Dalma phase transition. Only the Dalma and Pisdeli phases occur at Pisdeli Tepe. Accordingly, temporal comparisons may be made at Hajji Firuz and Pisdeli Tepe, that yield quite different kinds of information. [Pg.123]

It has been suggested some years ago that an acid deposition monitoring network should be set up in East Asia (Murano, 1997a, b). A uniform sampling and analysis protocol together with quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures has been proposed. This network is now in use and wonld prodnce more reliable data, which conldbe nsed to make more meaningful spatial and temporal comparisons. [Pg.94]

At the level of the chemoreceptor, differences in stimulus intensity result in differences in the rate of impulses transmitted to the central nervous system. As an insect moves in space or remains in one place, this information alone can potentially provide for a temporal comparison, and thus an interpretation of the stimulus pattern that is changing in its vicinity or that it is passing through. If an insect has a multiple receptor system with receptors spaced at sufficient distances to perceive a detectable difference in stimulus intensities, an instantaneous comparison can be made to interpret the nature of the stimulus pattern at one point in time. As summarized by Stadler, Chapter 1 and Mustaparta, Chapter 2, nothing is known as yet about the neural mechanisms responsible for integration through temporal and instantaneous comparisons. [Pg.96]

Arrestment and escape, as reviewed recently by Kennedy (1977,1978), can be accomplished by modulating locomotory rate and turning velocity. For example, increased turning velocity and decreased locomotory rate allows an insect to remain in a resource patch (Gunn and Pielou, 1940), whereas decreased turning velocity and increased locomotory rate allow an insect to escape from a stress source. Temporal comparison seems most likely to be the mode used to process gradient information that leads to output in terms of alterations in locomotory and turning rate. Contrary to some notations in the literature, the spatial-temporal stimulus pattern or at least thresholds must be monitored by the animal in order for these mechanisms to work. [Pg.100]

Second, perception of the plume boundary, i.e. a marked decrease in odor concentration, releases a turn to the opposite tack (counterturn), keeping a walking insect within a plume (Fig. 4.4) B. mori - Kramer, 1975 P. americana - Tobin, 1981). These results show that olfactory information processing is involved to a certain extent in regulating orientation within an odor plume. Since cockroaches with only one antenna turn into the plume when they reach a boundary, we can assume that temporal comparisons are employed, at least by... [Pg.103]
