Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686-1736). German instrument maker. Fahrenheit invented the first practical mercury thermometer. In developing his temperature scale, Fahrenheit chose 0° to be the temperature of the coldest sample he could make in his laboratory, namely, a mixture of snow, water and ammonium chloride. The high end of his scale was chosen to make body temperature equal to 96° (more precise modern measurements give body temperature as 98.6°F). [Pg.285]

Celsius scale (centigrade scale) A temperature scale in which the temperature of pure melting ice at standard pressure is fixed at 0° and the temperature of pure boiling water at standard pressure is fixed at 100°. The temperature interval unit on the Celsius scale is the degree Celsius (°C), which is equal in magnitude to the kelvin. Before 1948 the Celsius scale was known as the centigrade scale. The absolute temperature scale that corresponds to the Celsius scale is the Kelvin scale for the Fahrenheit scale, the absolute scale is called the Rankine scale. Still other units encountered in the literature and workplace come from various other systems (absolute and otherwise). These include metric systems (c.g.s. and MKS), some of whose units overlap with SI units, and those (FPS) based on English units.
