One of the key properties of coumarone-indene resins is the softening point. This is determined by careful selection of the feedstock, manufacturing process, level of constancy in temperature during reaction and concentration of initiating system. Practically all passes over as a light straw-coloured (sometimes brown) liquid at 80°/25 mm. it melts at 6°. Some of the colour may be removed by shaking with silver powder. The minimum polydispersity index from a free-radical polymerization is 1.5 if termination is by combination, or 2.0 if chains ate terminated by disproportionation and/or transfer. Changes in concentrations and temperature during the reaction can lead to much greater polydispersities, however. Process performance is affected by temperature. The reaction rate decreases with temperature over a range of 4—31°C. As the temperature decreases, dispersed effluent suspended sohds increase. In one chemical plant in West Virginia, the average effluent suspended sohds was 42 mg/L during the summer and 105 mg/L during the winter. Temperatures above 37°C may result in a dispersed floe and poor settling sludge.
