The most commonly used pesticide is not one we normally call to mind when we consider pesticide use to control insects, weeds and plant diseases in agriculture and forestry. It is creosote, a wood preservative. Its use exceeds that of all other pesticides combined, being used in an amount of approximately 15 million pounds per year. Other wood preservatives in the top ten are pentachlorophenol and chromated copper arsenate, the third and sixth most used pesticides, respectively. The second most commonly used pesticide is a soil fumigant, DD or telone, used at about 3 million pounds per year.

Nandi and Walker [499J compared the uptakes of two acidic and one basic dye by coals, chars, and activated carbons and noted that the area covered by a dye molecule would depend on the nature of the solid surface. They concluded that the removal of acidic groups by heat treatment had an effect on dye uptake for one activated carbon but had no effect for another. The authors did not report the pH of the adsorption measurements, nor did they characterize the surface chemistry of the adsorbents. McKay [500] did report the pH and even studied the effect of pH (in the range 5.2-8.5) on the rate of adsorption of Telon blue (an acidic dye), but the effect was neither clarified nor found to be significant. In contrast, Perineau et al. [501] noted major effects of pH on the adsorption of both an acidic and a basic dye and concluded that pH values of about 2 are the best for the adsorption of acid dyes whereas less acidic values (pH > 5) are to be preferred for the removal of basic dyes. ...

Both male and female dogs ingesting 1,3-dichloropropene (15 mg kg day ) for either 13 weeks or 1 year exhibited primarily regenerative hypochromic, microcytic anemia. Chronic exposure via the oral route has also caused neoplastic and preneoplastic lesions of the stomach in rats. Hyperplasia and hyperkeratosis of the forestomach and urinary bladder hyperplasia were reported in mice exposed to one formulation of 1,3-dichloropropene (Telone Ilb) for 2 years through inhalation.

In another method [30] fabrics treated with several concentrations of NaOH are immersed in a mixture of 1.3 g/1 Telon Fast Red AF-3G 150% (BAY), a low molecular weight acid dye, C.I Acid Red 151 and 1.4 g/1 Benzo New Blue GS 140% (BAY), a large molecular weight direct dye, C.I. Direct Blue 10, liquor ratio 70 1 at pH 2 using H SO for 10 min cold followed by washing off. Untreated cotton is stained red and becomes progressively bluer with increase in NaOH concentration.
