Another anomeric effect is that acetal C-0 bonds, and to a lesser extent, the bonds between acetal carbons and ether oxygens, are shortened or elongated as a function of their associated torsional angles. Jeffrey and Taylor modified MMl to account for these anomeric effects (17) and similar additions were put in the standard 1985 version of MM2 (11). The parameterization of MM3 for anomeric effects is preliminary, with recent (18-20) results being monitored. [Pg.124]

On the other hand, Muller et al. [75-78] have reported on a purely elastic Taylor-Couette instability for models with or without Newtonian contribution (Jeffreys or Maxwell). The conclusion of their studies is that negative second normal stresses are stabilizing, especially for very small gap ratios, and that the Newtonian relative contribution has a stabilizing influence. [Pg.222]

Any model linear in its location parameters 0 has a uniform Jeffreys prior p 6i) over the permitted range of 0 . This condition occurred in Examples 5.6 and 5.8, where the model = p + eu with location parameter p was used. The Jeffreys prior p(0 ) is likewise uniform for any model nonlinear in 0 , over the useful range of its linearized Taylor expansion that we provide in Chapters 6 and 7. [Pg.90]

The interpretation of the broad line is somewhat more ambiguous than the interpretation of the narrow line. Because the broad line occurs in films with dihydride or trihydride sites as well as in films with only monohydride sites, there is no direct correlation between the sites that constitute the broad line and the local bonding configurations indicated by the infirared absorption measurements. Evidently many kinds of clustered environments can contribute to the broad line. The most commonly accepted interpretation of this line is that it is due to the hydrogen atoms bonded on the internal surfaces of small voids (Reimer et ai, 1981b Jeffrey et ai, 1981a Carlos and Taylor, 1982b). [Pg.108]

The first interpretation of these data was in terms of relaxation via tunneling or disorder modes (Carlos and Taylor, 1980 Reimer a/., 1981c Jeffrey etai, 1981a), which were originally invoked to explain anomalies in the low temperature thermal properties of amorphous solids. Pioneering scientists such as Etter [27,28],Leiserowitz and Schmidt [16,17], Jeffrey and Saenger [29,30], and Taylor and Kennard [31] have conducted extensive studies of the solid-state structures of organic compounds in a search for patterns, directionality, and strength in the occurrence of hydrogen bonding. [Pg.102]
