Taylor hypothesis

Measurements of the vertical velocity, far from the injection site, were made at a fixed position using a hot-film system (e.g. [108]), from which the bubble diameter and rise speed could be calculated. The accuracy of the measurements have been extensively tested at low void fractions using LDV and optical methods. The time-series of the velocity measurements were converted into spatial information using a Taylor hypothesis that a mean flow advects disturbances past the probe. Examples of the velocity time-series is shown in Fig. 7.5. A more thorough description of the experimental technique and diagnostic tools applied to the data is given in [358],... [Pg.265]

To model the temporal behaviour of the turbulence induced aberrations we assume that a single layer of turbulence can be considered as frozen , but translated across the aperture by the wind. This is known as Taylor s frozen-flow hypothesis. The temporal behaviour can then be characterized by a time constant,... [Pg.8]

In addition to its relatively high affinity at postsynaptic 5-HT receptors, MDMA exhibited high affinity for 5-HT uptake sites and has been shown to increase the release of [ H]5-HT and block [ H]5-HT uptake in vitro. These data suggest that some of the actions of MDMA may be mediated at presynaptic binding sites. With respect to [ H]5-HT release, MDMA has been reported to increase the release of [ H]5-HT from brain synaptosomes (Nichols et al. 1982) and hippocampal slices (Johnson et al. 1986). With respect to uptake blockade, MDMA has been reported to competitively inhibit H-5-HT uptake in vitro (Shulgin 1986). Furthermore, the neurotoxic effects of in vivo administration of MDMA on serotonin terminals can be blocked by concomitant administration of the 5-HT uptake blocker citalo-pram (Battaglia et al. 1988b Schmidt and Taylor 1987). Additional evidence in support of the hypothesis that MDMA produces some of its... [Pg.251]

The earlier assumption that Luna was a body which had been captured by the Earth can now be regarded as relatively unlikely. The same is true for the double planet hypothesis , according to which Luna and the Earth were formed at the same time from condensing primordial matter (Taylor, 1994). There are, however, still disagreements on the point in time at which the collision occurred and on the masses and the physical states of the heavenly bodies involved (Halliday and Drake, 1999). [Pg.30]

A comprehensive compilation of data derived from feeding and other biosynthetic studies performed by Kirby [21], Sammes [22], and Taylor [23], genomic studies conducted by Howlett [lc, 24], as well as our own synthetic studies probing the innate reactivity of various intermediates (vide infra) culminated in our formulation of the biosynthetic hypothesis delineated below (Scheme 9.1). The biosynthesis features two distinct phases an oxidative dimerization phase and a thiolation phase in which diketopiperazine structures are elaborated to afford the defining epipolysulfide motifs (Scheme 9.1) [25, 26]. [Pg.214]

Until now, no certain evidence of the existence of GWs has been found. However Hulse and Taylor, studying the PSR 1913+13 binary system of pulsars, found that experimental data were fully coherent with the hypothesis that part of the system energy was lost through gravitational radiation [52-54],... [Pg.351]

For two decades, the role of lipophilic chemistry in the evolution of mesograzer host range was heavily influenced by the enemy-free space hypothesis by Hay et al. (1987). This theory predicts that small herbivores consume and inhabit seaweeds that are chemically defended against larger, more mobile herbivores such as fishes and urchins. Support for these patterns can be found in several contexts from temperate North Carolina (e.g., Duffy and Hay 1991, 1994) and New Zealand (Taylor and Steinberg 2005), and the tropical Caribbean (e.g., Hay et al. 1990) and Guam (e.g., Paul 1988 Cruz-Rivera and Paul 2006), and the Antarctic (Huang et al. [Pg.216]

In each of the cases we will solve the full physical problem numerically. Its section average will be compared with the solution the proposed effective ID model with Taylor s dispersion. Finally, if one makes the unjustified hypothesis that the average of a product is equal to the product of averages, averaging over sections gives a ID model which we call the "simple mean". We will make a comparison with the solution of that problem as well. [Pg.25]
