Chapter 3 deals with the Synthesis of the Separation System. A task-oriented approach is proposed for generating close-to-ophmum separation sequences for which both feasibility and performance of splits are guaranteed. Emphasis is placed on the synthesis of distillation systems by residue curve map methods. 

The classical function-oriented automation concept forfeits efficiency the instant a diversity of process and products are targeted. On the other hand, by centralizing automation, i.e., by devolving automation tasks away from the periphery to a powerful central robot, highly variable processes can be tackled, e.g., in combinatorial synthesis. One feature of these so-called sample-oriented systems is that the pipetting function is centralized. 

The arrival of workstations (1985) and of a new multi-tasking operating system, UNIX, is at the origin of a revolution in the scientific computation that continues today. Few scientific software companies survived these dramatic changes. The reusability of the old proven FORTRAN routines in a new object oriented programming environment was critical. 

It is reasonable to expect that microfluidic and chip-based technology will become widely applicable to glycomics, as it has already become in many aspects of genomics and pro-teomics. Miniaturized CE-MS technology should develop into reliable task-oriented commercial instrumentation, applicable to investigation of different biological systems under well-designed conditions.

One further objective is to motivate readers in putting together modules (chapters from different volumes) relevant to their interests, creating in this manner individual, task-oriented threads trough the series. An example of one such thematic thread set by the editors refers to simultaneous particle formation and drying, with a focus on spray fluidized beds. From the point of view of process-systems engineering, this is process integration - several unit operations take place in the same equipment.

A great number of experimental facts (see, for example, [4,5]) show that lots of absolutely different low-molecular liquid systems with different microscopic basis of interaction demonstrate, as M. The systems of such type have been developed of all last 10 years. We shall bring some characteristics of one of the last development within the framework of European BRITE project, carried out in LETT This 3D cone-beam tomograph is referred to as EVA Bench or Equipment for Voludensimetry Analysis. It is oriented on NDT of industrial products from ceramics and other composites. One of the main task of this tomograph is achievement of high resolution at study of whole internal volume of researched object. For test sample of the size 10mm spatial resolution in 50mm was obtained [14].
