In the 1980s, the need to create materials designed for use in the body gave the impetus to biomaterials. In pharmacy, sustained controlled-release systems and later targeted drug-delivery systems led to the development of hydrogels, biodegradable polymers and nanomaterials.

In the recent years, the usage of polymeric materials for drug delivery matrix tablets has become prevalent. Current research into the utilization of the metabolic activity and the colonic environment in the lower gastrointestinal tract has attained immense value in the design of novel colon targeted drug delivery systems by the utilization of natural biodegradable polymers. 

Some of their derivatives have been used as antiviral drugs. Due to their flexible chemistry, they can be exploited to design drug delivery systems and in molecular nanotechnology. In such systems, they can act as a central lipophilic core and different parts like targeting segments, linkers, spacers, or therapeutic agents can be attached to the said central nucleus. Their central core can be functionalized by peptidic and nucleic acid sequences and also by numerous important biomolecules.
