SMART targets

As Protagen AG is a specialist in applied protein science, we have designed a concept for target discovery and lead identification, the small molecule adaptation on research targets (SMART) approach (Figure 10.1). The concept is based on common knowledge and on the hypothesis that every drug sold in the market...

In Europe, a smart building is seen as an object, and no difference is made between private or public usage. The emphasis is on more efficient and comfortable buildings, be they public or private. Administration and services around a building are targeted.

Two main fields of application have been explored fine chemistry/ pharmacy (Hessel et al. 2004a) and fuel processing (Hessel et al. 2005d). A few investigations target manufacture of bulk chemicals or intermediates. In addition, the production of smart and functional materials is the focus, such as pigments (Wille et al. 2004), encapsulated delivery...

The K-Means method can be rather efficient for a large number of objects, but requires a priori selection of the number of clusters K, and thus is less exploratory in nature than the HCA methods discussed earlier. In addition, its outcome depends on the initial selection of targets. As a result, one can do a smart selection of the initial targets based on their uniqueness in the data set, for example those objects with the highest Hotelling P value (Section 12.2.5) obtained from a PCA analysis of the data.
