In Europe, a smart building is seen as an object, and no difference is made between private or public usage. The emphasis is on more efficient and comfortable buildings, be they public or private. Administration and services around a building are targeted.

The concept of the Smart Building is new, but the tradition it follows is not Since the time when humans lived in caves, there has been a steady evolution of the structures in which society lives, works, and interacts. The basic concept of the Smart Building will most likely change and adjust as new technologies become available. Most technologies are still hypothetical and will not be implemented for many years.

Smart Buildings Buildings or homes that have been designed with interconnected electronic and electrical systems which can be controlled by computers. Advantages include the ability to turn appliances and systems on or off remotely or on a set schedule, leading to greatly enhanced energy efficiency.

In a smart building, computers and sensors would measure light striking windows and the room temperature and adjust the electrical current to the electrochromatic windows. Huge energy savings are envisioned because ot reduced demand lor electricity to run air conditioners or for heating fuels. 

The helical structure of N -LC could be retained in the film which results in selective reflectance that can be tuned across the entire visible spectra and into the near-infrared area. Therefore, this transparent film might be useful for near infrared shading for energy-saving in areas of smart building.
