A short digression on units is perhaps appropriate here. We shall use either Gaussian rrrrits in this book or, much more frequently, Hartree s atomic units. Gaussian units, as far as we are concerned, are identical with the old cgs system of units with the added proviso that charges are measured in unnamed electrostatic units, esu. The value of e is thus 4.803206808 X 10 esu. Keeping this number at hand is all that will be required to use Gaussian rmits in this book. [Pg.5]

In this book SI (International System of Units) units are used fairly consistently in keeping with current practice. Some quantities are traditionally expressed in hybrid units —for example, the specific area is usually measured in m2 g "1 — and we continue this practice. The older literature uses cgs (centimeter-gram-second) units almost exclusively, so the reader must be cautious in consulting other sources. Appendix B contains a list of conversion factors between SI and cgs units. [Pg.1]

In this book we have used two systems of units. The first is the SI system, which we use in the early chapters of the book and in particular for electromagnetic quantities. In extremely cold environments, engines can quickly become difficult, sometimes nearly impossible, to start. If ordinary gasoline- or diesel-oil-fired heaters are used, the coolant circulation pump, air fan, etc, must be powered from the vehicle s batteries, thus curtailing the time the system can be used, especially at very low temperatures when it is needed the most. By adding PbTe thermoelectrics to such heater systems, about 2% of their thermal output can be turned into electricity to mn the heater s electronics, fuel pump, combustion fan, and coolant circulation pump, with stiH sufficient power left over to keep the vehicle s battery fliUy charged. Fluidized-Bed Vinegar Reactors. Intimate contact of air A.cetohacter is achieved in fluidized-bed or tower-type systems. Air introduced through perforations in the bottom of each unit suspends the mixture of Hquid and microorganisms within the unit. Air bubbles penetrating the bottom plate keep Jicetobacter m. suspension and active for the ethanol oxidation in the Hquid phase.
