Multiphase flow is important in many areas of chemical and process engineering and the behaviour of the material will depend on the properties of the components, the flowrates and the geometry of the system. In general, the complexity of the flow is so great that design methods depend very much on an analysis of the behaviour of such systems in practice and, only to a limited extent, on theoretical predictions. Although several different system configurations have been simulated, the focus of this paper will be on the unsteady, compressible, multiphase flow in an axisymmetric ramjet combustor. After a brief discussion of the details of the geometry and the numerical model in the next section, a series of numerical simulations in which the physical complexity of the problem solved has been systematically increased are presented. For each case, the significance of the results for the combustion of high-energy fuels is elucidated. Finally, the overall accomplishments and the potential impact of the research for the simulation of other advanced chemical propulsion systems are discussed. [Pg.112]

The geometry of the ramjet system simulated is shown in Fig. 7.1, which consists of a cylindrical inlet connected to a central dump combustor that has an exhaust nozzle. This specific geometry was chosen because extensive studies have been made in the past of the interaction between acoustics, vorticity dynamics, and chemical energy release in this system [17-20]. These earlier gas-phase flow studies are very helpful in interpreting the current multiphase flow simulations. [Pg.113]

Especially for multiphase systems flow visualization (Wen-Jei Yang, 1989 Merzkirch, 1987) can provide valuable initial information on the prevailing flow patterns and should at least always be considered as a first step. Of course, in applications that involve extreme conditions such as high temperature and/or pressure it is very difficult if not impossible to apply flow visualization and other techniques should be considered. Here the use of cold flow models which permit visual observation might be considered as an alternative as an important first step to obtain (qualitative) information on the flow regime and associated flow pattern. Of course, multiphase flows exist such as dense gas-solid flows that do not permit visual observation and in such cases the application of idealized flow geometries should be considered. A well-known example in this respect is the application of so-called 2D gas fluidized beds to study gas bubble behavior (Rowe, 1971). [Pg.282]

Multiphase flow is encountered in many chemical and process engineering applications, and the behaviom of the material is influenced by the properties of the components, such as their Newtonian or non-Newtonian characteristics or the size, shape and concentration of particulates, the flowrate of the two components and the geometry of the system. In general, the flow is so complex that theoretical treatments, which tend to apply to highly idealised situations, have proved to be of little practical utility. Consequently, design methods rely very much on analyses of the behaviour of such systems in practice. While the term multiphase flows embraces the complete spectrum of gas/liquid, liquid/liquid, gas/solid, liquid/solid gas/liquid/solid and gas/liquid/liquid systems, the main concern here is to illustrate the role of non-Newtonian rheology of the liquid phase on the nature of the flow. Attention is concentrated on the simultaneous co-current flow of a gas and a non-Newtonian liquid and the transport of coarse solids in non-Newtonian liquids. [Pg.162]
