Syphilis therapy

The natural and semi ynthetic penicillins are used in tire treatment of bacterial infections due to susceptible microorganisms. Fbnicillins may be used to treat infections such as urinary tract infections, septicemia, meningitis, intra-abdominal infection, gonorrhea, syphilis, pneumonia, and other respiratory infections. Examples of infectious microorganisms (bacteria) that may respond to penicillin therapy include gonococci, staphylococci,... [Pg.68]

As long as no evidence of CNS involvement exists, antibiotic therapy for gummatous and cardiovascular syphilis is identical to that for tertiary syphilis. [Pg.1163]

Treatment recommendations from the CDC for syphilis are presented in Table 46-6. Parenteral penicillin G is the treatment of choice for all stages of syphilis. Benzathine penicillin G is the only penicillin effective for single-dose therapy. [Pg.513]

Some experts administer benzathine penicillin G 2.4 million units IM once per week for up to 3 weeks after completion of the neurosyphilis regimens to provide a total duration of therapy comparable to that used for late syphilis in the absence of neurosyphilis. For nonpregnant patients pregnant patients should be treated with penicillin after desensitization. [Pg.514]

Alternative therapy for the following infections when penicillin is contraindicated Uncomplicated gonorrhea due to Neisseria gonorrhoeae] syphilis due to Treponema pallidum, yaws due to T. pertenue] Listeria monocytogenes] anthrax due to Bacillus anthracis] Vincent s infection due to Fusobacterium fusiforme] actinomycosis due to Actinomyces sp. Clostridium sp. [Pg.1577]

Bismuth, discovered in 1753, has a long history of medical uses ranging from treatment of syphilis and malaria to diarrhea. More recently, antibacterial properties of bismuth-containing antacids have been used to treat peptic ulcers. In general the medical use of bismuth has declined with the advent of new drug therapies. [Pg.130]

Ofloxacin Like norfloxacin, ofloxacin [oh FLOX a sin] is primarily used in the treatment of prostatitis due to E. coH and of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) with the exception of syphilis. It may be used as alternative therapy in patients with gonorrhea. It has some benefit in the treatment of skin and lower respiratory tract infections. [Pg.335]

Arsphenamin was the first drug substance with thermotropic mesomorphism to be therapeutically used as Salvarsan during the first half of the nineteenth century. The drug is effective against microorganisms and thus offered for the first time an efficient therapy of veneral diseases such as syphilis. Nowadays, it has been replaced by antibiotics with less serious side effects. [Pg.1123]
