Synthesis and environment

The majority of U(V1) coordination chemistry has been explored with the trans-ddo s.o uranyl cation, UO " 2- The simplest complexes are ammonia adducts, of importance because of the ease of their synthesis and their versatihty as starting materials for other complexes. In addition to ammonia, many of the ligand types mentioned ia the iatroduction have been complexed with U(V1) and usually have coordination numbers of either 6 or 8. As a result of these coordination environments a majority of the complexes have an octahedral or hexagonal bipyramidal coordination environment. Examples iuclude U02X2L (X = hahde, OR, NO3, RCO2, L = NH3, primary, secondary, and tertiary amines, py n = 2-4), U02(N03)2L (L = en, diamiaobenzene n = 1, 2). The use of thiocyanates has lead to the isolation of typically 6 or 8 coordinate neutral and anionic species, ie, [U02(NCS)J j)/H20 (x = 2-5). [Pg.330]

Porous samples would appear on the surface to provide such a complex and uncontrolled local environment for deformation of solids that they would be of little interest in scientific investigations. Indeed, the principal interest in their responses is technologically driven they are very effective attenuators of wave profiles and much of materials synthesis and processing is carried out on powders. Duvall [86D01] has summarized the difficulty of work with porous powder samples as follows ... [Pg.49]

Cluster 2 appears to be unique among Fe-S-containing proteins whose structures have so far been determined, emd it has been termed the hybrid cluster (6) because of its diverse chemical nature. Figure 14 is a schematic drawing of the cluster as interpreted from the final electron density synthesis and the structure refinement. The cluster contains both oxygen and sulfur bridges, and X represents a site whose precise nature has not been determined, but which may contain a partially occupied and/or disordered substrate molecule (see Section III,B,3,b). The environments of the four iron atoms can be described as follows. [Pg.240]

Special attention was paid to the detection of residual Cu-fl quantities accompanying the metallic Cu. The relative amounts of Cu+1 and Cu were determined by curve-fitting the Cu (LMM) spectra using the Physical Electronics Version 6 curve-fitting program. The catalyst showed reduction of Cu+2 Into a mixture of Cu+1 and Cu after reduction In H2 at 250 C for one hour (Figure 6) as evidenced by the two resolved peaks In the Cu (LMM) spectrum at 568.0 and 570.3 eV which are characteristic of Cu and Cu+1, respectively, and by the disappearance of the Cu+2 2p satellite structure. It could be shown that less than 2%, If any, of the total Cu could be present In the +1 oxidation state during methanol formation. However, when the catalyst was briefly exposed to air (1 minute), a few percent of Cu+1 readily formed (7). Thus, any kind of oxidation environment has to be avoided between methanol synthesis and catalyst analysis. Otherwise, appreciable amounts of Cu+1 will be detected. [Pg.21]

Although active safety is provided by the control systems mentioned above, passive safety is an additional important feature of a distributed plant. Due to the low inventory, even a total release of the reaction volume or an explosion would create no significant impact on the environment [139]. To prevent such scenarios, a total containment of the plant is envisaged it needs to be sealed for life . Hydrogen cyanide synthesis and chlorine point-of-sale manufacture are two examples for safety-sensitive distributed syntheses. [Pg.60]

Because carbon has a natural affinity for adsorption of heavy hydrocarbon species and polar molecules, CMS membranes need to be used at a sufficiently high temperature to eliminate contribution/interference of the adsorption. In contrast, strong adsorption of heavier molecules may be used to separate those species by adsorption as discussed earlier by the SSF mechanism (Rao and Sircar, 1993b). The SSF carbon membranes typically have pore dimensions much greater than those needed for CMS membranes since the separation is based on the adsorbed species effectively blocking permeation of other components (Fuertes, 2000). Carbon membranes are resistant to contaminants such as H2S and are thermally stable and can be used at higher temperatures compared to the polymeric membranes. For the synthesis gas environment, the hydrothermal stability of carbon in the presence of steam will be a concern limiting its operation temperature. [Pg.309]

It has been observed that cobalt may undergo large-scale reconstruction under a synthesis gas environment.27 Reconstruction is a thermodynamically driven process that results in the stabilization of less reactive surfaces. Recent molecular modeling calculations have shown that atomic carbon can induce the clock reconstruction of an fee cobalt (100) surface.28 It has also been postulated and shown with in situ x-ray adsorption spectroscopy (XAS) on cobalt supported on carbon nanofibers that small particles (<6 nm) undergo a reconstruction during FTS that can result in decreased activity.29... [Pg.52]
