Symbolic communication

Once a convention-based communication system is used, it soon becomes clear that it is the notion of contrast in form that is the key to success. To put it another way, once the form no longer needs to resemble the meaning, the communication system gains benefit from making the forms as distinct from one another as possible. To show this point, consider the following experiment. [Pg.10]

We grouped eight subjects into pairs, and in isolation, asked each pair to design a communication system based on colour cards. The premise was that the pair were in a noisy pub, one individual was at the bar while the other was sitting down at a table. We said there were four basic concepts to communicate I would like a drink of water , I would like some food , 1 would like a beer and 1 would like to listen to some music . Chemists communicate in a highly elaborated alfabetic [sic] and symbolic language. The chemical nomenclature is a predominant literary language. Only short names are spoken, the official, sometimes very long terms are replaced by trivial names or are uncanonically abbreviated for oral communication. In addition, there exist a lot of different terms, symbols, definitions, and meaning for limits within the scientific community. Some of them seem to be confusing in definition and application and contradicting amongst themselves, too see Currie [1992, 1995, 1997] Ehrlich and Danzer [2006].
