Swelling power

From tamarind seed xyloglucan, carboxymethyl derivatives with different levels of DS were prepared in isopropanol medium [440]. Swelling power, solubihty and tolerance to organic solvents of the derivatives increased with increasing DS. The interaction properties of the unmodified xyloglucan with calcium chloride and sodiiun tetraborate were found to be reversed upon car-boxymethylation. 

The swelling power of some pharmaceutical products are well defined.

Potato starch usually contains 0.01-0.6% (w/w) phosphorus. Although phosphorus is present at very low levels, it has a significant effect on the physicochemical properties of starch. Phosphorus is in part responsible for the high swelling power, paste stability, and resistance to enzyme hydrolysis of potato starch. Potato starches contain significant amounts of monophosphate esters... 

Swelling degree can be determined as swelling power or swelling factor. Starch suspensions (1%, w/w) are heated at certain temperatures for 30 minutes. The starch sample is centrifuged and the supernatants removed. The sediments are weighed to determine swelling power (Liu et al., 2003).

Special apparatus may be used by means of which the swelling power of the gluten on heating is determined, but the indications thus obtained are in no way more valuable than those of a qualitative study of the external characters. 

The thermal cross-linking as well as the influence of internal structural stress may give rise to some limitation of the LODP concept if hydrolytic media of different swelling powers are compared or if the range of temperatures considered exceeds 100°C. In those cases, as well as after mechanical strain on the sample, the LODP obviously is not unambiguously determined by the physical structure of the sample but depends to some extent on the conditions of hydrolysis. 

An approximate idea of the degree of swelling (the swelling index) experienced by a coal on carbonization may be obtained from the coke button left after the determination of volatile matter, but in many cases this measure of the swelling power is not sufficiently discriminating, principally because this is not the main function of the test.
