Sutherland

Margaret Millen Jeffs Sutherland88 was the first woman Lecturer in chemistry at the Royal Technical College. Daughter of Andrew Sutherland, a manufacturer, she was bom in 1881 and attended the Lenzie Academy, Lenzie, and the Westbourne Terrace School, Glasgow. She obtained a B.Sc. (Glasgow) in 1908 and then became a researcher at UG from 1908 to 1912. [Pg.292]

Sutherland then had six publications with Forsyth James Wilson,90 Henderson s successor, on semicarbazones and acridines. Sutherland closed her obituary of Wilson with the statement It has been a privilege of the writer to collaborate with Professor Wilson in much of his later research and she therefore takes this opportunity to pay tribute to a kind and [Pg.292]

The University of Glasgow had a student chemistry society, the Alchemists Club, founded in 1916 by Catherine F. Davidson (later Mrs. Jones).91 The Club was formalized in 1918, at which time one of the two Vice-Presidents was a woman (Davidson), as were four of the six Ordinary Members of Council.92 [Pg.293]

The Club had regular social events, particularly dances. For example, in 1925, it was reported that  [Pg.293]

A new reaction was tried by several women students in the vicinity of Lab. Ill on 19th. November. It is called the French Tango Reaction. Several complicated movements of the Ions took place, usually they moved in pairs. The Results of the experiment were demonstrated at the Dance that evening.93 [Pg.293]

Samples are dried in temperature-controlled rooms kept at 40°C. The fraction that falls through a 60-mesh sieve ( 250 pm) is collected and used for analysis. [Pg.98]

5-g aliquot is analysed from the homogenized sample using an aqueous leach to target and extract weakly bound hydrocarbons from the surface of the sample particles or grains. [Pg.98]

The first pure molecular graphics system followed after a few years. It was built in 1970 by Langridgc at Princeton University 195], The system was based on the Picture System 2 of Evans and Sutherland and could also display bonds and colored atoms. [Pg.131]

The era of the Evans and Sutherland computer systems vanished in the first half of the 1980s, when powerful and more economical workstations were introduced. In spite of advances in computer graphics and in CPU power, these workstations dominate the everyday life of molecular modeling even today. [Pg.131]

Earl Sutherland of Vanderbilt University won the 1971 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for uncovering the role of cAMP as a second messenger in connection with his studies of the fight or flight hormone epineph rine (Section 27 6)... [Pg.1161]

I. W. Sutherland, Biotechnology of Microbial Exopolysaccharides, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, U.K., 1990. [Pg.303]

A recent victim of the killer micros was Evans and Sutherland s parallel computer development effort, halted ia 1990. Their architecture combiaed a small number of approximately 1-MFLOPS processors iato semi-iadependent functional units. Several of these units could, ia turn, be combiaed to form a processor hierarchy, building up to systems that were expected to cost between 1 and 8 million dollars. With the advent of lO-MFLOPS uniprocessor killer micros, such an architecture became irrelevant and the project was halted. The RISC killer micro could deUver the same level of performance as could the combiaed efforts of 10 of the 1-MFLOPS processors, evea with the unlikely assumptioa that the problem could be perfectiy parallelized across 10 processors. [Pg.95]
