This chapter presents a framework for systematically investigating electroplating sustainabihty problems through introducing a family of sustainability indicators, conducting sustainability assessment, and identifying solutions for sustainabihty performance enhancement. Case studies are provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the framework. 

This chapter is organized as follows. In section State of the Art an overview of the state of the art on sustainable retrofit design tools and metrics is presented. In section Framework for Assessment of Retrofit Design Alternatives the strategic sustainable assessment of retrofit design (SARD) framework is presented with a step-by-step description. A case study is presented in section Case Study p-Galactosidase Production to highhght the application of the framework. Finally, conclusions are drawn in section Conclusions. 

Most recently, another methodology development with an emphasis on causal relationships, PROSUITE, was introduced under the EC 7th framework program. On the foundation of the (ISO) E-LCA framework, PROSUITE sustainability assessment is based on evaluating 16 midpoint and five endpoint impacts as shown in Fig. 14.1 [13].

Finally, we challenged stndents to consider how social considerations might be qnantifled in sustainability analyses. Students were asked to read about different measures of social sustainability (Hutchins and Sutherland 2008), including the United Nations Division for Sustainable Development framework (summarized in the table below). Hutchins and Sutherland, after reviewing a number of efforts to assess business sustainability, ultimately define and demonstrate the use of indicators of labor equity, healthcare, safety and philanthropy in evaluating the social sustainability of supply chains.
