Surgical sutures applications

Nylon monofilaments have found application in brush tufting, wigs, surgical sutures, sports equipment, braiding and outdoor upholstery. Nylons 610 and 11 have found extensive application in these fields because of their flexibility but nylon 66 is also used for brush tufting less than 0.0035 in. in diameter. Nylon 66/610 copolymer is used in the manufacture of a monofilament for angling purposes. 

There has been recent interest in lactic acid polymers and copolymers. These materials are environmentally attractive in that renewal and cheap source materials such as potato waste and cheese whey may be used. Nylons 6,6 and 6 are the ones usually employed as textile fibres. Where individual monofilaments are used, such as in brushes, sports equipment, or surgical sutures, nylons 6,10 and 11 tend to be used, because of their greater flexibility and water resistance. All nylons can be injection moulded and the resulting articles have found widespread use in engineering applications, such as bearings and gears. 

Polymers undergoing Type III erosion have found applications in (a) absorbable surgical sutures, (b) surgical adhesives, (c) contraception, and (d) controlled drug release. 

Biodegradable polymers are receiving more and more attentions for their wide application in biomedical uses, such as drug carriers, matrices in tissue engineering, surgical sutures, etc (1). 

Production of both monobasic aluminum diformate, (HO)Al(OOCH)2j and monobasic aluminum formoacetate, (HO)Al(OOCH) (OOCCH ), has declined. One reason could be the ready substitution of inexpensive aluminum formate solution (17—19) for solid aluminum acetate in formoacetate in most of the common commercial applications. Monobasic aluminum formoacetate, mol wt 148.05, mp 350°C, is a fine crystalline powder, prepared from aluminum metal. Besides film, other extruded applications of nylons are as monofilaments, which have found applications in surgical sutures, brush tufting, wigs, sports equipment, braiding, outdoor upholstery, and angling. 

Biodegradability is often an important consideration in the development of biomedical, pharmaceutical, and agricultural products for a number of applications. Biodegradable polymers have been formulated for uses such as controlled release and drug-delivery devices, surgical sutures, scaffolds for tissue regeneration, vascular grafts and stents, artificial skin, and orthopedic implants. 

P(3HB-co-4HB) copolymers are known to be biocompatible material. The biocompatible nature of these copolymers allows it to be utilized for various medical applications. These PHA polymers have been tested in tissue engineering applications as surgical sutures, bone plates, implants, gauzes, osteosynthetic materials, and also as matrix material assisting slow release of drugs and hormones (Zinn et al. 2001 Williams and Martin 2002 Sudesh 2004 Chen and Wu 2005 Freier 2006). Recently, electrospun nanofibers of P(3HB-co-4HB) have been evaluated as scaffolds in vivo and in vitro (Ying et al. 2008).
