Cardiomyopathy. The best available solution to cardiomyopathy may be one that is less sophisticated than transplant surgery or the artificial heart. The cardiomyoplasty-assist system combines eariier electrical stimulation technology with a new surgical technique of utilizing muscle from another part of the body to assist the heart. [Pg.181]

The emphasis in surgical assistant robots in the use of these systems cooperatively to enhance human performance or efficiency in surgery. Much of the past and current work on surgical augmenta-... [Pg.772]

Military support to civil authorities is the final tier in the nation s disaster response system. Federal resources that may be implemented in the event of a major biochemical or radiation disaster are the U.S. Army Special Medical Augmentation Response Teams. The mission of the SMART teams is to provide short-duration medical liaison to local, state, federal, and DOD agencies responding to disasters, civil-military cooperative actions, humanitarian assistance missions, weapons of mass destruction incidents, or chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive incidents. There are 37 SMART teams, including two burn SMART teams operated by the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical... [Pg.234]

Phenylephrine is seldom given systemically but is still commonly used as a mydriatic for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Ocular application of phenylephrine 10% in pledget form is used to produce hemostasis in laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) surgery and other ophthalmic surgical procedures. Phenylephrine is in some countries available in a non-prescription concentration of 0.12% for use as an ocular decongestant. Phenylephrine (up to 10 mg intramuscularly) has similar properties and uses to other alpha-adrenoceptor agonists. [Pg.2808]

In this chapter, we review the achievements of healthcare robotics in recent decades. We first discuss robotic systems for surgical operations that improve patient safety. We then review physical therapy training/assistive robots for disabled and aging people. Here, we exclude prostheses, orthoses, and robotic transportation assistance devices owing to space limitations but these areas are also considered important in terms of robotics applications. Finally, we conclude the chapter by discussing challenges facing biomedical robotics. [Pg.491]

Surgical CAD/CAM systems transform preoperative images and other information into models of individual patients, assist clinicians in developing an optimized interventional plan, register this preoperative data to the patient in the operating room, and then use a variety of appropriate means, such as robots and image overlay displays, to assist in the accurate execution of the planned... [Pg.744]
