Surfactant-Enhanced Electrokinetic Remediation of Chlorinated Pesticides

1L3 SURFACTANT-ENHANCED ELECTROKINETIC REMEDIATION OF CHLORINATED PESTICIDES [Pg.239]

1 Effects of Surfactants in Sorption and Solubilization of Chlorinated Pesticides [Pg.239]

Surfactants exist as monomers in solution and have a minimal effect on the solubility of most organic compounds at low concentrations (Pennell, Abriola, and Weber, 1993). However, as the concentration of the surfactant is increased above the CMC, a linear enhancement can be observed in the solubility of the organics. As the surfactant concentration is increased, the hydrophobic moieties of the surfactant monomers tend to associate with one another to form micelles. A hnear enhancement in the solubihty of organic compounds is typically observed above the CMC, which is attributed to the incorporation of the organic species within the hydrophobic core of the surfactant micelle (Rosen, 1989). [Pg.239]

The solubihty potential of a surfactant can be represented using the weight solubilization ratio (WSR). [Pg.239]

The solid-liquid distribution coefficient of HOCs in the presence of surfactants can be represented as follows (Sun et ai, 1995)  [Pg.241]
