Suppliers’ data sheets

Appendices 8.11, 8.12 and 8.13 open up a relatively new topic where a possible technical gap between the information given in polymer supplier data sheets and the properties of the plastic used in the final pack can be identified. 

The values for FAW and FD can be found in the material suppliers data sheets. The thickness h measurement requires greater care with specimens having a bag side (usually produees a rougher surface than the tool side).

The major hazard associated with sulfuric acid is its rapid destruction of bodily tissue. Protective equipment is essential. The types and extent of protective equipment depend on the activity that is undertaken. Supplier data sheets should be used to specify the gear used in each operation involving sulfuric acid. Grossel [19] also covers this subject. Section 9.1.4.4 discusses the precautions necessary when handling sulfuric acid.

Determining the properties of the various fill materials may be difficult for the user. Obtaining properties from the material suppliers data sheets may be possible for some properties, whereas others are more difficult to obtain for example, many manufacturers data... 

The designer should not overestimate the accuracy of the data provided from different sources such as property sheets and in manuals. They are usually mean or maximum values obtained from various observations and sometimes extrapolated. Inaccuracy that can exist is partly related to variations in the processing technique and partly to the geometry of the part in question. It is evident that in order to use the data from those you perform to those from material suppliers data sheets, it is imperative to have a thorough understanding of how the data are evolved and what caution is to be exercised when applying the data to product designs or other evaluations. 

This chapter has already hinted strongly at the need for information. If people are to work safely then, obviously, they need to know not just what hazards are present, but how to avoid them. For this, there has to be a body of knowledge which can be disseminated effectively. One source of information has already been described product safety data sheets. For all their faults, they are usually the basis of any data bank on chemical hazards. A practical problem is that few suppliers use the same format. It may, therefore, be helpful for laboratory or workshop managers to prepare internal data sheets, in a common format, for local use. Just as with the suppliers data sheets, these should concentrate on fact and avoid opinion. If, though, some chemicals are thought to be particularly dangerous, then the opportunity to highlight them should be taken. 

Suppliers data sheets, together with user manuals, are equally important for plant, machinery and tools. The habit of many people of unpacking the whizzmodge and playing with it before reading the instructions is not an aid to safety.
