Supervised elimination

Supervised variable elimination might also be regarded as variable selection. Whether we consider this to be the third major section of how to treat multivariate datasets is a matter of semantics, however. It is possible to eliminate variables in a supervised manner rather than to select them. One obvious way is to eliminate variables that have a zero or very low correlation with the response variable or variables. In the case of classified response data, this selection means those descriptors that have the same distribution (mean and standard deviation) for the two or more classes. The danger in this selection process is the possibility that a variable might have a low correlation with the response but contribute to a multivariate correlation. Although this is possible, in practice, it is unlikely. 

The number of papers published in the literature relating to supervised variable selection methods is vast. Its obvious association with the ubiquitous publication of regression modeling means that trying to provide an exhaustive overview of the literature is an impossible task. Although this chapter aims to review variable selection methods, all that we can hope to achieve realistically is a broad coverage of the more obvious source methods and report here techniques that are sound from a statistical point of view and for which the software is available

Heavy-walled drums once used for lead antiknock chemicals have been used for water storage or as barbecue pits, with subsequent risk to the user from residual toxic material. Equipment from the industry cited has for many years been cleaned, cut up, and sent under supervision to steel mills for recycle to eliminate the possible misuse of scrapped containers. 

For all operations, activities or tasks, written procedures usually termed Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs) should be made, vetted by a Committee of Experts (COE) and approved by the Central Authority. Subsequently, no deviation/s should be made without the approval of the Central Authority. All operations or activities should be supervised by the next level of leadership, that is, supervisor or senior scientist. Thus, careful planning and strict supervision must be followed to eliminate accidents or fires. 

Most crimes have an obvious motive, but this one did not. Supervision instituted new procedures. When slurry feed supply is shut down, procedures require the operators to continue agitation and acid flow for at least 30 minutes. On startup, the agitators and acid feed will be restored before starting up the slurry pumps. Both of these steps were designed to eliminate the possibility of having an undetected layer of calcium carbonate. 

This innovation can be an important practical element in stimulant utilization, eliminating the hassle and pragmatic difficulties of lunchtime dosing at school, including storage problems, potential diversion, and the need for a medical professional to supervise dosing away from home... 

The studies were carried out in air-conditioned areas from which hazards of accidental injury had been eliminated as thoroughly as possible (e.g., glass panels in doors were replaced with wood, electric outlets and cables shielded, and sharp comers padded). Beds and collet, messing and recreational facilities were provided within the research areas. The research was conducted under surveillance of qualified physicians, who administered all injections or oral doses of the test substances. When volunteers were exposed to inhalation of vapors or aerosols, the concentrations of these substances in the air to be breached by the subjects were established by appropriate personnel. Breaching of the contaminated air by the volunteers was observed and supervised by physicians. After an exposure to an agent, the volunteers were observed continuously for 8-24 h, and then Intermlctently for up CO 14 d. In a few cases, followup studies were made 6 mo or more after the exposure. 

A pilot plant can be computer controlled in one of two ways supervisory or direct digital control as shown in Fig. 10. In the first, a computer supervises another primary control element. In the second, the interfacing element is eliminated and the controller (e.g., a valve) is regulated directly. New computer-based automatic instrumentation is likely to be supervisory because it is faster and less expensive. (See also Refs.P - l.)...
