The extraction column to be used in the process will have an internal gauze packing - Sulzer BX, that was chosen due to its large interfacial area, high porosity and low pressure drops. 

The experimental data on the pilot scale were obtained using a column 316 mm in diameter. The non-reactive stripping and rectifying sections contained wire gauze packing, while the reactive section of the column was equipped with Katapak SP-12 from Sulzer. The elements contained the same catalyst as already used in the... 

The hydraulic operation of structured packings with countercurrent gas and liquid flows is somewhat different than that of random dumped packings. The wire-gauze type is wetted by capillary action, so that the entire geometric surface area becomes available for mass transfer at low liquid flow rates. Thus, Sulzer BX packing was found to have 2 A times the static liquid holdup of Flexipac 2 or Gempak 2A sheet metal types of structured packings [14]. However, once the surface is completely wetted, capillary action has only a small effect as the liquid rate increases.

Sulzer katapak-S were developed for use in reactive distillation, though their use for trickle bed operations [18, 19] and as catalyst carrier in bubble flow columns [20] has also been investigated. Like DX, these packings consist of corrugated sheets made from wire gauze. Every second channel between the corrugated sheets is closed to form a tea bag which is filled with catalyst particles (Fig. 8.13). Therefore, voidage (ca. 40 %) and surface area (440 m2 m-3) are approximately half of those for the DX.
