Sulfur Hexafluoride, SF

Nonmeta.ls, Sulfur reacts with fluorine to yield the remarkably stable sulfur hexafluoride, SF. Operating conditions must be controlled because a mixture of the lower fluorides such as disulfur difluoride [13709-35-8] 2 2 disulfur decafluoride [5714-22-7] 2 10 sulfur tetrafluoride [7783-60-0] SF4, may also be formed. When this reaction is carried out between 310 and 340°C, SF is primarily obtained and essentially no SF and only trace amounts of lower fluorides. Below 300°C, and preferably at ca 275°C, SF is the primary product. At 450—500°C, a mixture comprising ca 50% SF and the lower sulfur fluorides is formed (see Fluorine compounds, inorganic-sulfur).

If there is substantial airflow through the pathway, the peppermint oil odor could be diluted so that it is imperceptible. Tracer gases such as sulfur hexafluoride (SF ) can provide qualitative and quantitative information on pollutant pathways and ventilation rates. Use of tracer gases to obtain quantitative results requires considerable technical expertise. If it appears that a sophisticated study of pathways (or ventilation rates) is required, you need to use trained investigators. 

Burgess et al." describe a study of gas storage cabinets. In the study, coefficient of entry (CJ for various inlet/outlet configurations was measured. A tracer gas study is also described. The tracer gas study involved releasing sulfur hexafluoride (SF ) at 0.032 L s" at a critical leak position in the cabinet and measuring SFg concentration in the exhaust stream. The tracer gas was turned off when a steady exhaust stream concentration was observed and the time for the concentration to decay to 5% of steady state was measured. 

Thus the bonding in sulfur hexafluoride SF has for a long time been considered to involve two of the 3d orbitals of sulfur, with the sulfur in a sp d hybridized state and... 

Routes of air-borne contamination into BFS containers were investigated during a study using Sulfur hexafluoride (SFs) tracer gas. During this experiment, the tracer gas was released at a known concentration into a clean room that housed an aseptic BFS machine. Levels of the tracer gas were then measured within subsequently filled BFS units. The study concluded that the container was effectively protected by the localized air shower. Although not necessarily representative of deposition of microbial contaminants, there also was conclusive evidence of some room air within the BFS containers. The control of environmental contamination within the clean room is therefore important.

Two separate test bums were conducted in accordance with the EPP to demonstrate that project emission limits could be met. First, sulfur hexafluoride (SF ), a thermally-stable surrogate, was injected and burned to optimize operating conditions and demonstrate thermal destruction efficiency and acid gas removal capabilities. Batches of frozen mustard were then processed under the optimized conditions to establish system performance for regulatory approval. The SF6 and mustard test bum results are summarized in Table 6.3.

For substances that consist of discrete molecules, their formulas describe the relative numbers of the constituent atoms and the total number of atoms in a molecule for example, acetylene, C2H2 benzene, CsHs sulfur hexafluoride, SFs. 

Ventilation efficiency can be characterized by measured levels of metabolically generated CO2 or by the concentration decay of a passive tracer gas. Sulfur hexafluoride (SF ) is often used for this purpose, and it is introduced into the space under consideration. The faster the decline of SF, the greater the ventilation of the space.
