Sulfonated polyaniline

It is also possible to polymerize the 3-aminobenzenesulfonic acid to produce polymetanilic acid which is also soluble. Thus, preparation of a solid polymer of this type is not possible in aqueous acidic solutions, but it may be possible in a neutral solution of aqueous-organic mixed medium. However, to exhibit the electrical and electrochemical properties, protonation of the imine nitrogen of the PANI backbone in poly(metanilic acid) is necessary, which requires an acidic solution. An acid group-substituted, self-doped PANI has better electrical and electrochemical properties over a wider pH range. [Pg.181]

Note 4 A polymer that shows electric conductivity due to the transport of ionic species is called an ion-conducting polymer an example is sulfonated polyaniline. When the transported ionic species is a proton as, e.g., in the case of fuel cells, it is called a protonconducting polymer. [Pg.244]

The synthesis of self-doped conducting polyaniline was achieved by sulfonation of the aromatic units with fuming sulfuric acid. The sulfonated polyaniline has a conductivity of 0.1 S/cm, which is independent of pH [191]. [Pg.60]

Since multiple electrical and optical luiiclioiialily must be combined in the fabrication of an OLED, many workers have turned to the techniques of molecular self-assembly in order to optimize the microstructure of the materials used. In turn, such approaches necessitate the incorporation of additional chemical fimctionality into the molecules. For example, the successive dipping of a substrate into solutions of polyanion and polycation leads to the deposition of poly-ionic bilayers [59, 60]. Since the precursor form of PPV is cationic, this is a very appealing way to tailor its properties. Anionic polymers that have been studied include sulfonated polystyrene [59] and sulfonated polyaniline [59, 60]. Thermal conversion of the precursor PPV then results in an electroluminescent blended polymer film. [Pg.420]

An interesting option in terms of dopants is to incorporate an inherently conducting polymer such as a sulfonated polyaniline (PMAS Figure 2.8) as the molecular dopant.
