Dinitrophenols are a class of synthetic organic chemicals that can exist in six individual forms. Dinitrophenols do not occur naturally in the environment. This profile mainly contains information on the most commercially important dinitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol, which is called DNP in this document. Industries manufacture dinitrophenols. DNP is sold under many trade names, some are Caswell No. 392, Sulfo Black B, and Nitro Kleenup. It is a yellow solid with no known smell. It dissolves slightly in water. DNP present in water and soil as a pollutant does not easily evaporate to air. The taste of DNP is not known. Commercial DNP is primarily used for making dyes, other organic chemicals, and wood preservatives. It is also used to make photographic developer, explosives, and insect control substances. You will find further information on the physical properties and uses of DNP in Chapters 3 and 4 of this profile. [Pg.14]

STANNITE (Mineral). This mineral is a sulfo-stannate of copper and non, sometimes with some zinc, corresponding to the formula. Uii PeSnS j It is tetragonal brittle with uneven fracture hardness, 4 specific gravity, 4.3-4.5 metallic luster color, gray to black, sometimes tarnished by chalcopyiite stieak, black opaque. The mineral occuts associated witli cassilerile, chalcopyiite. tetrahedrite, and pyrite, probably the result of deposition by hot alkaline solution. Stannite occurs in Bohemia Cornwall, England Tasmania Bolivia, and in the United States in South Dakota. It derives its name from the Latin word for tin, stannum. [Pg.1536]

Black Dyes. Water-soluble black ink jet dyes are selected from disazo, polyazo, metal complex, and sulfur dyes [7], For ink-jet systems using the piezo technology, C.I. Direct Black 19, 35255 [6428-31-5] and DirectBlack 154,303865 [54804-85-2 are used. Food Black 2, 27755 [.2118-39-0] was selected for thermal ink-jet printers due to its thermal stability, but this dye exhibits a poor waterfastness. Replacing the sulfo groups by carboxyl groups gave C.I. DirectBlack 195 (1), which has been introduced in commercial printers and shows much improved waterfastness due to pH-dependant differential solubility [3],... [Pg.498]

Pontachrome Blue-Black R (zinc salt of 4-sulfo-2,2 -dihydroxyazo-naphthalene, C. I. Mordant Black 12) gives an orange-red fluorescence with aluminum salts in acetic acid solution Idn. Limit 2 y A1 in 1 ml). This test appears to be specific for aluminum Be, Zn, and Ga, which behave similarly to aluminum in the fluorescence reaction with morin, do not react with this dyestuff. It is probable that this reaction can be carried out as a spot test. [Pg.102]

TDG may undergo oxidation to TDG sulfoxide, which is conjugated with glutathione to form l,l -sulfonylbis [2-S-(N-acetylcysteinyl)ethane]. Following the p-lyase pathway, the l,l-sulphonylbis[2-(methylsulfinyl)ethane] and l-methylsulfinyl-2-[2-(methylthio)ethylsulfonyl] ethane can be formed (Black and Read, 1995). Figure 56.6 summarizes the pathways of sulfur mustard biotransformation. No sulfo- or glucuronyl-conjugates were detected in urine after i.v. administration of sulfur mustard (Maisonneuve et al., 1993). [Pg.845]
