Benefits Ginseng s main action is to help the body fight off physical, chemical and biological attacks by raising the body s own defence mechanisms. In human studies, there was a visible benefit in terms of physical and mental performance. It was also shown to reduce blood sugar levels in Type II diabetics.

The infamous aphrodisiac or passion-stimulator called Spanish Fly is not made of flies, but rather of dried and crushed beetles from several different genera. The resulting powder contains cantharidin, a compound that causes a strong burning sensation when taken orally or if rubbed on the skin. The increased blood flow caused by this irritation can prolong sexual stimulation. Similar effects have been obtained with mixtures of sugar, paprika, ginseng, licorice root, and various peppers. 

Ginseng is used for many medicinal and rejuvenating reasons domestically and abroad. Traditional Chinese medicine values ginseng as a nerve and cardiac stimulant, a treatment for impotence, to promote metabolism, and to moderate blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Two or three grams are considered therapeutic. Fifty grams has been prescribed but has resulted in adverse side effects.

Human studies have demonstrated that Asian ginseng may modify glucose regulation (Reay et al. 2006 Sotaniemi et clI. 1995 Vuksan et al. 2008 Xie et al. 2005). People with diabetes are advised to monitor their blood sugar closely and discuss the use of this herb with a qualified healthcare practitioner prior to use.
