Sugarcane borer

Pests iaclude rats, a severe problem ia some areas, wild animals, nematodes, and a number of iasects. The most severe iasect pests are the various types of borers, ie, the sugarcane borer, Diatrea saccharalis (F.) and the eldana borer, Pldana saccharina which cause damage first by boring iato the cane stalk, then by providing entry poiats for other diseases, and finally by reduciag cane and juice quality.

Fenobucarb is used for control of leafhoppers, plant hoppers, rice stem borers, rice bugs, bollworms, aphids on rice plants, sugarcane, tea, cotton, wheat, and vegetables. Its oral LD50 in rats is -640 mg/kg. 

The sugarcane rootstalk borer weevil is attracted to aggregate by food, others of its kind, and by their frass.161 If the pheromones involved can be identified, they can be used in traps. Insects interact with the terpenes in plants in a variety of ways.162 The insect may find the host plant in this way, either to eat it, or to lay eggs in it. Terpenes such as pulegone (11.34),163 thujone, camphor, and citronellal repel insects (11.35). Linalool has been used as an insecticide on house plants.

The Ueno-Stork reaction is a radical cyclization of the a-haloacetal of an aUylic alcohol that provides substituted tetrahydrofuran and y-lactone derivatives. The chiral center of the aUylic moiety can control the stereochemical outcome, and the stereoselectivity may also be affected by the conformational anomeric effect. The Ueno-Stork radical cyclization has been applied in the synthesis of (-l-)-eldanolide (Scheme 25.22)," the pheromone of the male African sugarcane stem borer Eldana saccharina, in which bromoacetal 49 evolves to 50. The stereochemical outcome of these reactions is rationalized by a chair-like transition state, in which the adopted conformation maximizes the anomeric effect of the acetal center.
