Subtractive primary colorants

Color Dyes. Color quality is determined by the dyes chosen for the primary colors yellow, magenta, and cyan. Important parameters for subtractive color reproduction are peak wavelength, breadth of absorption peaks and the absence of secondary absorptions [11]. 

In terms of color, we have additive processes (emittance) and subtractive processes (reflectance). If we wish to match colors, the primary colors are quite different, namely-... 

Color cannot be measured because it is perceived in the brain. However, it can be specified instrumen-tally using additive or subtractive mixing to produce a color that matches the object color. In the former, a match to most colors can be made by the additive mixing of light of the three primary colors. A measure of the intensity of the three primaries provides a specification of the color. Primary colors are defined such that none can be matched by mixtures of the other two. The principle of additive mixing is the basis of the common tristimulus and spectrophoto-metric methods of measurement.

Primary colors, additive n. Three colored lights from which all other colors can be matched by additive mixture. The three must be selected so that no one of them can be matched by mixture of the other two. Generally, a red, a green, and a blue are used. Additive primaries are the complements of the subtractive primaries.

Copper phthalocyanine blue pigments have been widely used in the subtractive color process, e.g., in offset printing inks. The three primary colors of this process are cyan, yellow and magenta. Beta-form phthalocyanine blue is the pigment of choice for the cyan colorant.

A complementary color is a secondary color that mixes with the opposite primary color on the color wheel to produce white light in additive color mixing or black in subtractive color mixing. 

A primary color is one of a set of colors that when added together as light produce white light. Subtractive mixing leads to an absence of color (black). Red, yellow, and blue are a set of primary colors. 

A secondary color is the complement of a primary color. When light of a primary color and its complement (secondary) color are add, the result is white light. When they are subtracted, the result is an absence of color (black). 

Printers use colored materials, eg, inks (qv), that absorb or subtract regions of the visible spectmm from white light. Subtractive color is usually represented by the three printer s primaries cyan, magenta, and yeUow (CMY). Cyan absorbs red light, magenta absorbs green, and yeUow absorbs blue light.
