Noncompliance with the requirements of OSHA s respiratory protection standard is one of fhe fop fen cifafions lisfed in Table 9.12. In fhe following sfafemenf, Mansdorf (1993) makes a number of imporfant stafements concerning personal profechve equipmenf (PPE) worfh faking some time to consider carefully  [Pg.285]

Head protection (hard hats, welding helmets) [Pg.286]

Several requirements for both the employer and the employee are mandated under OSHA s personal protective equipment standard. OSHA s requirements include the following  [Pg.287]

126 Additional requirements for special dipping and coating applications Subpart I—Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) [Pg.462]

Subpart I requires employers to provide employees with proper PPE for the work performed. As part of this requirement, the employer must conduct a hazard survey of the work to determine the control measures to use where hazards cannot be eliminated. This serves as a resource in guiding the selection of appropriate PPE. This includes PPE for eyes, face, head, and extremities. Other types of equipment that may be required are protective clothing and equipment as well as respiratory devices All PPE is to be maintained and in a sanitary condition. [Pg.462]

Not only are the employers required to provide needed PPE, but they are also required to train workers how to use and wear their PPE. Equipment for emergency use should be stored in an accessible location known to all workers. The requirements for respirators and their use is the most extensive part of the subpart. [Pg.462]

This subpart provides the standard for quality, as well as selection of PPE such as eye and face protection, head protection, respiratory protection, foot protection, and hand and arm protection. [Pg.462]

Subpart I requires all power-operated tools that are designed with guards be equipped with those guards. Additionally, external protrusions such as wheels, pulleys, and shafts should be guarded according to the requirements presented by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Employees working near hazards or under hazardous conditions such as falling objects, dust or harmful fumes will wear the appropriate personal protective equipment at all times. [Pg.431]

Compressed air shall not be used for cleaning purposes except where reduced to less than 30 p.s.i. and then only with effective chip guarding and personal protective equipment which meets the requirements of Subpart E of this part. The 30 p.s.i. requirement does not apply for concrete form, mill scale and similar cleaning purposes. [Pg.424]

When exposure to hazards cannot be engineered out of uormal operations or maintenance work, and when safe work practices and other forms of administrative controls cannot provide sufficient protection, a supplementary method of control is the use of PPE. PPE may also be appropriate for controlling hazards while engineering and work practice controls are being installed. For specific OSHA requirements on personal protective equipment, see OSHA s standard, 1910 Subpart I. [Pg.194]

However, OSHA does provide some guidance to employers in Appendix B to Subpart I to Part 1910 — Non-Mandatory Compliance Guidelines for Hazard Assessment and Personal Protective Equipment Selection, which includes the following ... [Pg.107]

Enforcement Guidance for Personal Protective Equipment in General Industry, replaces Inspection Guidelines for 29 CFR 1910 Subpart I, the revised Personal Protective Equipment Standards for General Industry issued in June 1995. Changes include clarifying what type of PPE employers must provide at no cost to workers and when employers are required and not required to pay for PPE. The directive also provides guidance that allows employers to use PPE that complies with current consensus standards and updates PPE enforcement policies based on court and review commission decisions. [Pg.14]
