Subdue products

Distillation to small volume of a small sample of a 4-year-old mixture of the alcohol with 0.5% of the ketone led to a violent explosion, and the presence of peroxides was subsequently confirmed [1]. Pure alcohols which can form stable radicals (secondary branched structures) may slowly peroxidise to a limited extent under normal storage conditions (isopropanol to 0.0015 M in brown bottle, subdued light during 6 months to 0.0009 M in dark during 5 years) [2], The presence of ketones markedly increases the possibility of peroxidation by sensitising photochemical oxidation of the alcohol. Acetone (produced during autoxidation of isopropanol) is not a good sensitiser, but the presence of even traces of 2-butanone in isopropanol would be expected to accelerate markedly peroxidation of the latter. Treatment of any mixture or old sample of a secondary alcohol with tin(II) chloride and then lime before distillation is recommended [3], The product of photosensitised oxidation is 2-hydroperoxy-2-propanol [4].

Fractionation of Porphyrin Methyl Ester. The product mixture (50 mg) was dissolved in methylene chloride (2.0 ml) and treated with excess ethereal diazomethane freshly prepared from p toluenesulfonylmethylnitrosamide (Diazald). The mixture was stirred in subdued light at room temperature. The solvents were evaporated gradually in a fume cupboard. The residue was dried in vacuo and separated on preparative TLC plates to give the methoxyethyl diporphyrin methyl ester whose NMR is shown in Fig. 7 and 8. 

Nitrofuran antibacterials are synthetic compounds that are substitution products of the 5-nitrofuran nucleus, differing in the substituent at position 2. This substituent may be an azomethine group connected with other ring systems, or an alkyl, acyl, hydroxyalkyl, or carboxyl group, free or esterified. All these antibacterials are susceptible to photolysis, particularly by sunlight, and manipulations must be carried out under subdued light. 

In a well-constructed fine fragrance the heart of the perfume needs to be contained within the lower part of the composition, since this part will remain on the skin for many hours after application. Many of these long-lasting materials, as pointed out by Carles, are rather unpleasant when smelled initially and it is part of the function of the modifiers and finally the top notes to subdue and round off the character of these products in the final accord. 

Light (especially UV) is known to facilitate CIO2 gas decomposition into CI2 and O2 this is why its production is preferably conducted in the dark or in very subdued light. 

Straight and branched chain reactions almost invariably have complex rate expressions, as shown by -d[H2]/df = A [H2]° [02]° [N2]° for the H2 + O2 reaction in aged boric-acid-coated vessels at 500 Torr and 773 K [6]. Change of pressure can have striking effects even when achieved by addition of an inert gas such as N2. Hydrocarbon combustion reactions proceed through the formation of many intermediates, both radical and molecular, prior to formation of the final products CO2 and H2O. Another striking feature is the sensitivity of chain reactions to traces of impurities and to changes in surface properties. This is particularly pronounced in the case of some explosion boundaries or limits where parts per million quantities of an impurity may completely subdue the explosion. 

Silver selenite was prepared by addition of a selenious acid solution to a solution of silver nitrate. The product was recrystallised three times from nitric acid ( ). Sodium hydrogen selenite solution was prepared by neutralisation of recrystallised selenious acid by carbonate-free sodium hydroxide. The silver-silver selenite electrodes were obtained by first electroplating silver onto a platinum foil and then converting some of the silver to silver selenite by further anodic electrolysis. The procedure was apparently the same as used for the preparation of silver-silver chloride electrodes. The experiments were carried out in the dark or in subdued daylight. 

Whey wine is an experimental product being test marketed. After deprotein-izing with UF, the lactose is fermented for about a week by special lactose-fermenting yeast. The finished product is a pale-yellow, tart, dry wine with a subdued aroma and bouquet. 

Iridoids and secoiridoids, as it happens in other groups of natural products, may show an ample variety of structures. It is well known that the biochemistry, the physiology, and the morphology of a plant is subdued to evolutional pressure. During millions of years of evolution, countless number of products have been synthesized by different species, and we can wonder what may be the sense for the plant to contain such as enormous amounts of variants in a sort of metabolic orgy that seems to be senseless. We must not forget that the variability is the bases for natural selection. 

The more hazardous the product the more subdued and sober should be the tone of the label. 

Since the product is light-sensitive, all operations should be carried out in the dark or in subdued light. The resulting yellow precipitate is collected by suction filtration on a 30-mL sintered glass funnel (medium porosity) and washed with three 10-mL portions of 4 Af nitric acid and three 10-mL portions of methanol. It is placed in an open amber bottle, which is allowed to stand overnight in a desiccator in the absence of light. The yield of product is 3.25 g (40%).
