Study of Intermediates

In Section 4.7, we encountered the main types of reactive intermediate and the factors that made them more or less stable. We can summarize  [Pg.277]

Carbenes are disubstituted carbon atoms bearing two electrons (which may be paired or unpaired). The parent species is methylene, CH2. The structures of carbenes are based on sp hybridization, and there are two possible arrangements of the electrons within the [Pg.277]

Thermodynamic considerations determine whether or notan organic reaction is possible. Enthalpy terms are generally dominant and depend on the strengths of the bonds made [Pg.278]

Entropy terms are important where there is a choice between inter- and intramolecular [Pg.278]

Exposure Period Three exposure periods - acute (less than 15 days), intermediate (15-364 days), and chronic (365 days or more) are presented within each relevant route of exposure. In this example, an inhalation study of intermediate exposure duration is reported. For quick reference to health effects occurring from a known length of exposure, locate the applicable exposure period within the LSE table and figure. [Pg.255]

In 1962 Olah repotted the NMR spectrum of the t-butyl cation in superacid solution, [1] and NMR was thenceforth the ex rimental method of choice for studies of intermediates in solution acid chemistry. The inhomogeneous nature and diversity of solid acid systems will ensure that no one experimental technique will so completely dominate as NMR has in solution studies, but the contributions and potential of NMR to solid acid studies are clearly such as to put it on an equal footing with reaction studies, infrared, TPD, diffraction methods and calorimetry. [Pg.573]

The successful study of intermediates not only provides one or more signposts which help define the detailed pathway traversed by a reaction, the intermediates themselves may also provide inferential evidence about the transition states for which they are often taken as models (cf. p. 41). [Pg.51]

Dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP) enhanced 15N CP MAS NMR has been exploited by Mark-Jurkauskas et al.79 in the studies of intermediates of the bacteriorhodopsin photocycle. The data for L intermediate were similar to those found for 13-ds,15-anti retylidene chloride, while those for K intermediate were similar to those of acid blue bacteriorhodopsin in which the Schiff base counterion was neutralised (Table 3). The 15N chemical shifts observed have shown that for bacteriorhodopsin, the Schiff base in K intermediate state loses contact with its counterion and establishes a new one in L intermediate state. The proton energy stored at the beginning in the electrostatic modes has been transformed to torsional modes. The transfer of energy is facilitated by the reduction of bond order alternation in the polyene chain when the counterion interaction is initially broken and is driven by the attraction of the Schiff base to a new counterion. 3D CP MAS experiments of NCOCX, NCACX, CONCA and CAN(CO)CA types have been used in studies of proteorhodopsin.71... [Pg.159]

Therefore, unless dermal absorption studies indicate that this prediction is incorrect, there is no need for additional studies of intermediate dermal toxicity. [Pg.106]

This technique complements quite well the systematic study of intermediate gels by 29s or Al-NMR spectroscopy (12,14). ... [Pg.126]

The only information available for humans exposed to chlordecone pertains to a study of intermediate-to-chronic occupational exposures (exact durations not recorded) of one group of individuals employed at a facility in Hopewell, Virginia. Chlordecone was manufactured in this facility for 21--22 months because of poor hygiene at the facility, exposure by all routes was likely. In addition, concomitant exposure to a precursor was possible. Several studies have been published to describe the toxicity in this human population (Cannon et al. 1978 Taylor 1982, 1985), and results of these studies will be considered here. These results pertain to the chronic-duration exposure also. No deaths were reported (Cannon et al. 1978 Taylor et al. 1978). Skeletal muscle biopsy was conducted on six workers who experienced adverse neurological clinical signs (such as tremors) as well as muscle weakness and incoordination (Martinez et al. 1978). Abnormal histological and biochemical indices were revealed in this tissue. Joint pain was also reported (Taylor 1982, 1985). [Pg.156]

Differing results on the carcinogenic capabilities of chloroform have been demonstrated in laboratory animals. Chloroform is carcinogenic in laboratory animals after oral exposure in some studies of intermediate durations. An increased incidence of hepatomas was observed in mice exposed by gavage for... [Pg.105]
