Schiraldi et al. [64] have developed this kind of material by combining silica particles and pHEMA. pHEMA is a biocompatible hydrogel that has been widely studied in the past decades due to its chemical-physical structure and mechanical properties. It has been widely used in ophthalmic prostheses (contact or intraocular lenses), vascular prostheses, drug delivery systems and soft-tissue replacement [65]. These authors have shown that by incorporating silica nanoparticles, the resulting hybrid material is highly biocompatible and promotes bone cell adhesion and proliferation of bone cells seeded on it.1 ... [Pg.378]

He subsequently joined the staff of the Cellulose Research Institute at the State University College of Forestry in Syracuse, New York, first as a research associate, then as an assistant professor. In 1960, he was promoted to associate professor. His research dealt mainly with the structure and mechanical properties of regenerated cellulose and cellulose derivatives. [Pg.155]

In addition to these experimental methods, there is also a role for computer simulation and theoretical modelling in providing understanding of structural and mechanical properties of mixed interfacial layers. The techniques of Brownian dynamics simulation and self-consistent-field calculations have, for example, been used to some advantage in this field (Wijmans and Dickinson, 1999 Pugnaloni et al., 2003a,b, 2004, 2005 Parkinson et al., 2005 Ettelaie et al., 2008). [Pg.308]

The structure and mechanical properties of ASA and blends of ASA and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) have been studied. 40/60 and 60/40 blends of ASA/PBT are composed of two phases, thus are dispersed, while a 50/50 blend shows a cocontinuous structure. With increasing processing temperature, the mechanical properties decrease, probably due to the degradation of PBT in the course of processing. The mechanical properties do not as much decrease for blends with a continuous structure (24). [Pg.337]
