Because of these collection rates, high-throughput synchrotron operations are as much an issue of sample and data management as of data collection. Biological catalysts — enzymes — are usually proteins. The development of new protein syntheses is nowadays dominated by genetic protein engineering (see section 4.1.2.6). Bio-organic approaches towards novel catalytically active structures and replicating systems try to manage without biopolymers. 

Chemoinformatics (or cheminformatics) deals with the storage, retrieval, and analysis of chemical and biological data. Specifically, it involves the development and application of software systems for the management of combinatorial chemical projects, rational design of chemical libraries, and analysis of the obtained chemical and biological data. The major research topics of chemoinformatics involve QSAR and diversity analysis. The researchers should address several important issues. First, chemical structures should be characterized by calculable molecular descriptors that provide quantitative representation of chemical structures. Second, special measures should be developed on the basis of these descriptors in order to quantify structural similarities between pairs of molecules. Finally, adequate computational methods should be established for the efficient sampling of the huge combinatorial structural space of chemical libraries. 

Managed healthcare systems also have interests in reductionist definitions of disease. The payment and reimbursement structures of Health Management Organizations (HMOs) require that conditions be identified and coded in terms of a predefined list of syndromes with pre-established measures of cost and risk. Calling for evidence-based medicine , HMOs are more likely to reimburse conditions that are defined as biological because diagnosis appears objective.
