Stable Strontium. Few studies were located regarding endocrine effects in humans after oral exposure to stable strontium. Vezzoli et al. (1998) reported that strontium absorption was inversely correlated with parathyroid hormone levels. 

The exact site of absorption of strontium in the gastrointestinal tract is not known however, studies in hamsters suggest the possibility of absorption in both the stomach and small intestine. In hamsters that received a gavage tracer dose of 85SrCl2, 37% was absorbed, whereas 20% was absorbed when the dose was administered to hamsters that had their pyloric sphincter ligated (Cuddihy and Ozog 1973). Studies in preparations of in vitro and in situ isolated intestine of the rat provide direct evidence for strontium absorption in the small intestine (see Section 3.5.1).

D. The uptake by the body of radioisotopes can be blocked in some cases. For example, potassium iodide or iodate if given prior to or soon after an intake of radioiodine, will reduce the uptake of radioiodine by the thyroid gland. Similarly, orally administered Prussian Blue will reduce the absorption of cesium from the gut and Alginate will reduce strontium absorption. No policy exists which would allow for NATO forces to stock and issue chelators. 

Aluminum and silicon both severely depress strontium absorption. Adding lanthanum to the solution removes the interferences by binding the interfering dements... 

The manufacturer notes that aluminium/magnesium hydroxide slightly reduced the absorption of strontium ranelate (AUC decreased by 20 to 25%) when given either at the same time or 2 hours before the strontium. However, when the antacid was given 2 hours after strontium, absorption was barely affected. Therefore, the manufacturers recommend that antacids should be taken 2 hours after strontium ranelate. However, because it is also recommended that strontium ranelate is taken at bedtime, they say that, if this is impractical, concurrent intake is acceptable. Note that calcium-containing antacids would have a greater effect, see (b) below, and concurrent intake would not be recommended. 

Intestinal strontium absorption is also affected by chelating agents. Within this group sodium alginates are of main interest because they have been proven to inhibit the intestinal absorption of strontium, without an appreciable effect on calcium absorption [37,38]. In this respect, they can be a useful tool in the treatment of contamination by radioactive isotopes of strontium. 

The effects of food, calcium carriers, and phosphate on the intestinal strontium absorption have been Investigated extensively [39-42]. However, in a number of cases the inhibitory action of an increasing dietary calcium content was biased by a simultaneous increment of the dietary phosphate content [40]. 

Animal studies have demonstrated that in mothers intestinal strontium absorption is gradually increased during pregnancy and lactation, with a maximum increment (approximately 150%) at the end of lactation period [43,44].
