Stress corrosion cracking other elements

Brasses are susceptible to dezincification in aqueous solutions when they contain >15 wt% zinc. Stress corrosion cracking susceptibiUty is also significant above 15 wt % zinc. Over the years, other elements have been added to the Cu—Zn base alloys to improve corrosion resistance. For example, a small addition of arsenic or phosphoms helps prevent dezincification to make brasses more usefiil in tubing appHcations. [Pg.231]

NACE studies determined that the most severe corrosion problems occurred under thermal insulation at temperatures between 140° and 250° F (60° to 120° C) where the temperatures were too low to quickly boil off any intruding water. At temperatures higher than the boiling point of water, other corrosion problems can occur. One material that has wide application in the systems of DOE facilities is stainless steel. There are nearly 40 standard types of stainless steel and many other specialized types under various trade names. Through the modification of the kinds and quantities of alloying elements, the steel can be adapted to specific applications. Stainless steels are classified as austenitic or ferritic based on their lattice structure. Austenitic stainless steels, including 304 and 316, have a face-centered cubic structure of iron atoms with the carbon in interstitial solid solution. Ferritic stainless steels, including type 405, have a body-centered cubic iron lattice and contain no nickel. Ferritic steels are easier to weld and fabricate and are less susceptible to stress corrosion cracking than austenitic stainless steels. They have only moderate resistance to other types of chemical attack. [Pg.34]

Thompson and Tracy carried out tests in a moist ammoniacal atmosphere on stressed binary copper alloys containing zinc, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, silicon, nickel or aluminium. All these elements gave alloys susceptible to stress corrosion. In the case of zinc the breaking time decreased steadily with increase of zinc content, but with most of the other elements there was a minimum in the curve of content of alloying elements against breaking time. In tests carried out at almost 70MN/m these minima occurred with about 0-2% P, 0-2% As, 1% Si, 5% Ni and 1% Al. In most cases cracks were intercrystalline. [Pg.707]
