This is an important relationship. It states that the modulus of a unidirectional fibre composite is proportional to the volume fractions of the materials in the composite. This is known as the Rule of Mixtures. It may also be used to determine the density of a composite as well as other properties such as the Poisson s Ratio, strength, thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity in the fibre direction.

In this chapter, the study carried out on nanofillers reinforced natural/synthetic rubber has been discussed. After a description on the NR rubber and CaCOs as filler, the development of synthetic composites with the incorporation of micro and nano-CaC03 as a filler material has also been discussed for comparative study. In particular, the role of fillers on the property modification of rubber properties, such as surface properties, mechanical strength, thermal conductivity, and permittivity has been mentioned. The effectiveness of this coating was demonstrated. The importance of well-dispersed nanoparticles on the improvement of the mechanical and electrical properties of polymers is also emphasized. However, one of the problems encountered is that the nanoparticles agglomerate easily because of their high surface energy. 

Filler A substance (typically inen) added to a plastic compound to reduce its cost or improve physical properties such as hardness, stiffness, impact strength, thermal conductivity or electrical conductivity.

Numerous studies have indicated that CNTs can nucleate PSCs, and it was suggested that both isothermal and nonisothermal crystallization behavior can be used as a bellwether of CNT/polymer soft epitaxial matching for templated crystallinity. With the addition of CNT fillers into polymer matrices, some new properties (electrical conductivity, flame resistance) can be imparted, while others (mechanical strength, thermal conductivity) can be enhanced. Again, these properties are dependent on the interplay between CNT and polymer matrix, as well as the organization of the two.

The specification also relates standard test methods to be used to determine such properties.
